I am looking for a checkered steel buttpad for a custom rifle that is in the works. I don't want a cheezy stamped POS. I am aware of the Dakota, but it is not checkered. If all else fails I could get one of the Dakota's worked on but it seems somebody should be making a good one.

Any ideas, I want it to match with a steel gripcap, and I really want something nice and most of what I have seen so far down't look real nice.

Anyway I would appreciate any suggestions.

No I haven't whats the quality like? I just checked and the style is exactly what I am looking for though.

I have a lot of time and dollars tied up in this custom and I am being picky on hardware pieces, I thought I had all the tough decisions made, but my stockmaker called today and hasn't liked any off the Buttplates he has ordered in so far he thought they all were cheap and stamped looking.

Sorry fred.....I haven't ever used one as I always want rubber on the butt to prevent slipping on hard surfaces. I can't honestly vouch for the quality but I can say that Brownells will take it back if you don't like it. I also can't provide a photo.

One has to believe it's not hand cut for $26 however.

It's in the white so if one really gets hard up he could also get some riffler files and touch it up a bit.

Brownell's carries one by Treebone Carvings that's a repro of the pre-war M70's. #507-000-001. I really like the looks of these early style buttplates. I've used original take offs on three of my stocks. They show up on EBay now and then.

FYI

I am putting it on a 1952 Model 70 thats been in the works for getting on year to date. Not all of its been shop time a fair amount has been in parts and right stock selection. So that prewar style would be perfect. My stockmaker will see Roger at a show in Lewiston later this month and was already planning on looking at the Biesen parts.

The ones from Brownells aren’t even close to the quality of Biesens. I have three of Rogers checkered trap door models and they are gorgeous pieces of work.

I like the Neidner style from Brownell's. Quality on the one's I have has been excellant. Checkering is sharp and clean. There is a matching grip cap.

I wouldn'd expect them to be. Nor would I expect the original Winchesters to be either.

I have had a different experience than zimbabwe on the Neidner plate.

I found the checkering to be a bit rounded and the border not so even.

Furthermore, there was a big gob of leftover casting material to be taken off the back.

Sounds like you are looking for something much nicer and are willing to pay for it.

If you want them to match I would say you probably want the Biesen cap and butt plate. The grip cap is larger than I like but you can't squack about the quality. Of course, the price reflects it too. Wink

I never minded the Niedner butt plate but I myself thought the matching grip cap looks a little cheezy. I prefer a Leonard Brownell cap to it, but then the Brownell cap really doesn't match any butt plate very well either.

I am in the process of giving my model pre-64 70 a facelift and I chose to use a Dressel grip cap, because it's smaller, and the original Winchester butt plate, but then I'm trying to keep it somewhat close to what a Supergrade looked like back then too.

I called Roger today, he has none in stock and its at lesat 30 days before he makes any more. If anyone has a checkered one they care to part with let me know.

My smith may have a lead on one but its doggy at best any other suggestions?

If I have to wait I will but I would rather get this rolling any other suggestions?

I was just pissing and moaning this rifle almost hits my personal record for owning it longer and having it in my personal possesion for the least amount of time. Its somewhere in the 2 days in my hand and 18 months in the shop at this point, Jeez*********

I admit I am be picky about this rifle, I want the it just so, but UGGG>>>>>>>>> another setback, I had hoped for last dear season (yeah right) now this years already shot, no chance that the engraving will be done by then, and at the rate its going fall of 2007 is optimistic.

The simplest things can be setbacks, just to clue in all: two buttstocks have been ordered and returned, both from Brownells, both were crummy, the buttpad ying yang is almost 40 days to date and sinking.

I have a couple of words right now but I prefer to be polite on line, but #### happens, nobodies fault, guess I should have figured this out months ago and ordered it.

I guess the brightr side is it gives me another year to figure out and pay for the high dollar scope.
