are worth as two piece shotgun stock blanks.

Mike Scott44 had a $700 sticker and the other $3000. I know which one is best but I think 44 could really grow on me. Can you get anything similar for less?
22 June 2006, 06:14
jeffeossoNO FRIGGIN WAY... I have held a 2500$ stock --- in fact, the other 2 posters on this thread have held the same one, and it was AMAZING...
3k for 1b? not on a bet, with 2000 in cash "incentives"

I realize wood is very subjective. I've bought a few nice pieces of wood that I'm sure some people wouldn't have liked, but I did.
That said, I would have guessed the top blank at $1200-$1300 absolute tops and the bottom one I would pass on. Considering how much good stock work costs, I would want something a little nicer than the bottom one.

Mike ScottI am trying to figure out what I want for a "special" project gun. I've got more time than money so I will be looking around for a while.
Like Jeffe said, give
http://www.denli-gunstocks.com/ a look. Great wood at a decent price. I just bought another one from him today.

fla3006Take a serious look at denli. Their blanks are outstanding and reasonably priced for high-end Turkish, and they're giving 10% off to AR people.

Just thhinkn also when you cut across the grain in #44 how its going to really change the looks. Its a good buy i think. Both are nice. van

Glen71#44 is probably better than it looks in the picture, as it is dry. However, I still think it is a little overpriced, though not as much as #1b. Denli has some really fine 2-pc. blanks, and I don't remember seeing any priced above $2K. I just ordered one today.
23 June 2006, 01:38
Mike ScottI have looked around the recommended sites and they have some pretty wood. But I don't see anything that has similar lines or the color of either of the two blanks in the pictures I posted. Is this because they are unusual, a different "style" preference, a result of poor layout or something else? If anyone sees something like the 44 blank on the throw away pile, I will pay the postage to get it to me.

Mike, If you like the blanks you've shown, buy them. Hell, who cares what the board thinks about it. You'll be the one hunting with them.

Mike ScottTerry, If I thought I really knew what I was doing, I might.

But this is my first time looking for custom wood and just because I like it does not mean it is a good idea.

dempseyI think that type of figure makes good table tops. It just doesn't look right on a firearm IMO.

Mike, I have lived in the area of calif. were our forefathers planted a lot of walnut trees. They have really gone by the way side since the 1960,s.They planted only so many trees and thats why a lot of gun comanies are going to turkey to get there wood. Its always going up in price not down! Just english walnut that is started with a black walnut then grafted is going for the ones left around here for $10 a pound from the ground. Now figure how much the stump and crotch area of the tree weighs? Eack tree is worth around $25,000.And they are shipping them over seas for venere. So, if you have the money buy, buy, buy, if you don,t want them later on,they are at this moment going up in price!!!!!!!!van

vapodogI shelled out $200 for this Bastogne blank.....as far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as a #3,000 blank

CustomstoxMike,
I do like 1b but would not pay that much for it. It would make an incredible stock. I also think that #44 would also make an great stock but is overpriced. I would use #1b in a heart beat. Jeffe, you can't try to compare a stock you have held and looking at in your hand and one in a photo. It is a biased argument. A blank always look better in person. I feel that 1B is an amazing blank. But then we are into an blonde and redhead argument.
Pricing wood is a very subjective thing. A good wood sales person has a grasp of what the market bears but they are still subject to their own biases of what grain flow looks good and what does not. The better ones mark their blanks down if they don't get any interest over time. BTW, Vapodog, there are $3000 blanks (and up) and $250,000 guns. Not a lot of them but your opinion does not make them go away.
I bought the following blank for $150 in a gun shop. They were asleep at the switch. Sharon Dressel valued it at $1200 - $1500.
The following one is $1400 or so. Both of these blanks are going on my guns. The upper one on a side by side and the lower on a Browning Skeet gun that I use more than any gun I have ever owned. It does deserve it.

Glen71Chic - Is the $1400 blank California English or Turkish?
23 June 2006, 07:29
333_OKHTry looking into the wood that NZ Walnut has. I just scratched the surface, and I never even looked at the 2-piece blanks.
NZ Walnut-Brian KerrI just wish you wouldn't tell eveyone how much you paid for it. I'll never think I'm getting a fair deal ever again.

CustomstoxGlen, I really don't know what the origin was. I got it from Maurice Ottmar and never asked. It does look like California grown English but that doesn't mean anything.
Terry, I will never think I am getting a good deal after that also. Now I peek over the counters in all gun shops looking for another one.

Chic,
I agree, it's not really fair, especially in this case there the denali stock, which had be drooling from photos, was amazing in person. Heh, back to blondes and redheads, what color is nichole kidman's hair these days?!?!?!?!

Mike,
Have you talked to Cecil Fredi yet? Since you're looking around I'd give him a call too, He's got good dry lumber, and will send you some pics of potential blanks. His contact info is on the website.

Glen71Chic - Here is a blank that may end up on my sporting clays gun.

[/url]
Glen, That's beautiful!
I gotta a question about purchacing a two piece blank. I've never done it, but alway's wondered. You alway's see the piece that's going to be the butt. What about the forend? Does a matching piece come with it? If not where do you get these?
Thanks,
Terry

Glen71Terry - Yes, a forend is always included in the price. You are somewhat at the mercy of the seller's idea of a "matching forend". Usually it is a separate piece, but sometimes the blank is large enough to include both the forend and buttstock.

I think the same color as my wife's, red, but my wife's buttstock and forend look better.

CustomstoxGlen, I don't think you meant it this way but, that picure sure works for me. That is a gorgeous blank. Speaking of sporting clays, I am on the way over to Sequim Washington in about one hour for a weekend one on one skeet clinic with Chuck Dryke at Sunnydell shooting preserve. Weather looks good and I have over 800 rounds loaded in the car. I am told I will need all of them. I understand I will end up shooting some sporting clays along with the skeet and have not tried that game and am looking forward to it.
Here is a link to their web site.24 June 2006, 03:16
Glen71Chic - I'm betting you will like Sporting Clays. It is addicting and sometimes frustrating. No wonder it is called "golf with a shotgun"!
The blank is from Denli A.S. It is "spoken for" but not here yet. After I ordered it, I discovered Rich Cole has CNC-inletted blanks for Beretta O/U's. The action-inletting is done and the stockbolt hole is drilled. The rest of the blank is "as cut". I might have gone that way had I known about it.
Denli eh?
Here's one I bought from him during the "charity rifle" sale.

Glen71Terry - Very nice color and contrast. That's a winner! Looks like a textbook quarter-sawn blank.
Terry,
That blank looks very nice....after seeing that picture, it may never leave Memphis...oh, I mean Germantown

...Mail may not get here

CustomstoxTerry, that is a fantastic blank and a great price. I need to start investing in some of their wood. Get a "Woody" today at a great price, lol.
24 June 2006, 12:30
Gringo CazadorTerry, I looked at that blank a few days back and started to buy it, but backed out. then Jeffe called me and got me all worked up about buying it..........but found out it had been bought, you got one really nice blank for the money. I told jeff it was to good to be true, I hope when you get it, it looks as good as the pics.

CustomstoxGlen, you are right about sporting clays. I really enjoyed it. His methods are helping with some things in skeet and frustrating me with others. I shot 400 rounds today and will probably do 500 tomorrow. Luckily it is 28 ga, I would be in poor shape with 12 ga.
Sorry for hijacking the thread guys.
