Leupold QR Ring Question

Say Gents,

I've put two set of these rings on two different rifles, and have a question.

The little locking levers don't seem to "flip" over far enough. On one rifle only, will the rear lever flip over a whole 180 degrees. The other three only go about 120 degrees.

They seem to hold, but it just makes me a bit nervous. I end up grabbing the scope between shots, just to check that it's secure.

I just wanted to know, if this is normal, or should I send them back?

Thanks!

Brian,

I have several of these QR rings on rifles up to .375HH. Mine seem to do the 120 degree lockover and I've never had a problem. I've conducted informal tests at the range, removing the scope several times and have not had any noticeable POI shifts. I've also shot 3 shot groups removing and re-attaching the scope for every shot and still shot in the one inch range (which is all I can usually do with my hunting rifles and loads).

I have seen this, I think it is the nature of the beast. I think it is a result of Leupold's excellent quality control (read sarcasticly).

Brian,
Mine have about 120 range; that has always been the case.

The difference between the two sets you have may be the result of a slight dimensional difference.

As long as they hold, it won't make any difference.

Well okay then...

As long as it's the norm, I'll relax and just use them.

I did get a suggestion to touch them up a bit with a round file, in the stud notch, and may try that on one set.

Otherwise, I'll let them be. Thanks for the help!

I have three sets of Leupold QR mounts on three rifles. In every case, the levers turn about 90 to 120 degrees (measured counterclockwise from the open position, with the lever turned fully to the right). I think this is what is supposed to happen -- the mechanism becomes more tight as you turn the lever more counterclockwise. So if yours are becoming tight anywhere within that arc up to 180 degrees, I think that's OK. If you have one that turns a full 180 degrees before it becomes tight, that's the one I'd question because beyond 180 degrees I think the thing may tend toward becoming loose again.

LE270 is right. I once had a set of QR rings that turned 360 degrees, meaning that the excentric part did not work at all. The less they turn, the tighter they are.

In my experience, using a large 30mm Zeiss scope on a 416 Rem, the QR studs and bases showed some wear after some 300 rounds. This wear was measurable by the larger angle of counter-clockwise turn needed to fasten the levers.
