3-pos safety on Zastava
I've failed miserably to fit three separate safetys to a CD Zastave action but they fit nicely on my VZ-24 actions!

It appears that the thread on the zastava is not timed the same as the Milsurps.....

Has anyone had this same thing happen to them as well?

Fred Zeglin built a .30-06 around a Zastava / Charles Daly left hand action for me.

The factory safety / bolt sleeve / shroud was replaced with a Dakota 3 position safety.

I have had no problems with it's function. But I did n't fit the safety.

Which makes of 3 position safety have you been using?

2 were Dakota and one was from Jeffe

I've installed a Dakota on a MKX without problem. As to the timing I swap Mil, MKX and Daly bolt parts without problems. Is the bolt a quicklock (shorter fall)? I don't know if that would increase the problems or not?

This old thread discusses Mauser speed lock bolts: https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...=865105184#865105184

Also, when I had a Gentry 3-position safety installed on my non-speed lock Mk X, Gentry had to grind material off the top front part of the cocking piece for it to work properly. I'll post photo's of the modified cocking piece later.

The cocking piece has to be cut back a ways because it is forward from where the regular ones are. Have never had a problem mounting them to the Zastava's, but then again, I don't use the Gentry's, nobody should. The Dakota's need almost as much work to get them to fit.

I knew there was a post that had a picture. Thanks you beat me too it. Just turn the bolt over and it is easy to see. The speedlock moves the cocking piece forward requiring more metal removal to get the safety to work. The later MKX were made this way and every Daly "I've" seen.

My memory is fading. The Gentry safety required grinding the cocking piece sear as shown below -not the top as I mentioned previously.

The top front of the cocking piece had to be relieved on a 2-postion safety that J Kobe installed for me on a VZ24.

Vapo,

That Zastava should have the correct cocking piece. I believe it was the one that was on it when I got it.

This part is not at all the problem.....the safety does not screw on far enough...theres a half thread left to go and won't work unless it's all the way on......and it won't go the last distance.

Three in a row this has happened to!

I've ordered more but it seems the solution is to mill off the receiver end and the end of the bolt to allow the safety to go on another half turn.

The only saving grace is that these safetys fit other mausers I have so I can use them.....but I've ordered a lot of them so far to fit this particular bolt and it just dont seem to be inthe cards.

I'm definitely not going to machine the receiver or the bolt except for as the instructions show.....bad enough that this happens but to trash the receiver because I missed something just ain't going to happen!

Are you lapping the safety onto the bolt?

Jim,

Im not trying to pick a fight. Why not? Is there a problem with the Gentry safety? I really need to know.

Nothing inherently wrong with the Gentry safeties. Kobe does not like them and that is perfectly OK for him to feel that way and not use them. He also feels the same way about the Dakota safeties. It is his opinion and luckily we have several M70 safety brands from which to choose.

Personally, I will continue to use the Gentrys on M700's. I have had no more problems with them than any other brand. The one I had the most trouble with was a Jim Wisner safety. But nothing was wrong with that safety-the tolerances and starts were just aligned against me. I take that back-I had an AHR safety that would not work at all, so that was the worst experience for me. Wisner unit was #2 worst. I would never use another AHR, but would have no problem ordering a Wisner or any other brand tomorrow.

It is just brand preference and nothing you should worry about from a performance or safety issue. All M70 units require some degree of fitting. As stated, Dakotas have been the best for me. Luckily we live in America and can all have an opinion and voice it!!!

I have installed two Gentry safetys on Zastave actions (Charles Daly) and the only problem I had was cutting the cocking piece correctly. I found that it does have to be cut back farther than the directions accompanying the safety indicates, and had to grind back the sear surface on the cocking piece a few thousands.
I made a jig to hold the cocking piece in the mill so I could cut the correct angle, that I learned from a gunsmith friend.
I tried a Dakota but it did not come close to fitting, I finally returned it to Brownells and got a Gentry that fit.
I am currently waiting on a Lapour safety for my 96 I hope it goes on ok, from what I read here I don't anticipate any problems.

I just took a working Dakota off a VZ I had "laying around here" and tried it and it's working nicely!!! This is one from a previous batch about six months ago

I'm now of the opinion that I have bought a bunch of defective Dakota safeties!

I just received my Charles Daly Zastava back from Dave Gentry, had him install his 3-position safety and adjust the trigger. I can find no fault with his work, at least not on my rifle. Thanks...Bill.

It was about 6 months ago I was working with the Dakota safety, it would not screw on far enough for the pin to engage the bolt lock slot, as I remember it was about .100 short.

I could not get a Dakota to fit a certain Mark X.
Actually it screwed on just fine, but it was very sloppy once it got on there so that it would actually go too far on. Ended up using a Timney with the safety.
