Can anyone help me find a source for checkered trap door steel buttplates. I am looking for the older style with the elongated 3 inch trap doors rather than the round hole type found on Springfields and Enfields.

Will be used on wood stocked centerfire rifles.

Numrich has a pretty large supply of the doors themselves and I bought ten of them in the event I have to end up making or adapting a plate. They only cost $2.15 each so if I screw it up I ain't out that much. They're pretty nice looking...three inches long by � inch wide and already checkered (page 1109 of their #26 categlog.)

It's pretty tough sometimes finding stuff when you want your rifles to be made from wood and steel rather that aluminum and plastic

A while back the NRA gunsmithing series featured a set of articles on making and installing your own traps and doors. I don't remember exactly which one had the articles and photos but if anyone had that set of books they may find the article. If not maybe a search of old bookstores will reveal the one.

I like the pic on the biesen sight of the trap door UNDER the recoil pad. Then you get the best of both, the function of the trapdoor plus a pad in between the rifle and your shoulder. I don't know which one offhand, but there was a gunsmith I met and wrote the name of somewhere that has it setup to cut the holes in the butt of the stock for the cartridge the rifle is chambered in, puts the trapdoor buttplate over it and you get a few extra cartridges right there. I would like to see these setups in person.

just remembered that new england custom gun carries a trap door butt plate thats made by recknagel of germany.

For anyone out there that hasn't had the pleasure of talking with Matt or doing business with him I would highly recommend doing both.

What a nice guy and helpful as hell. I ordered one of his steel triggerguard/floorplate assemblies for a Remington 700 I am building.

My other three 700's have D.D. Ross units on McMillan M40A1 fibergalss stocks but I'm building this one with a wooden stock and wanted a more traditional look for the metal.

I really don't believe that the extra weight and bulk of the D.D. Ross and the Badger units makes that much difference in the overall strength anyway. Matt assured me that his units are designed to fully withstand the force of torquing to 65 inch pounds and I think they are nicer looking to boot...not to mention a hell of allot cheaper!
