I found a 722 rem in 300 savage.
What length of cartridges fit such an action. Is it 308 only or could I put a .257 roberts in there ?
I Hand load but I really don't want to run ito a situation where I have to seat real deep to shoot 115 grain bullets...tj3006

It's the same dimensions as the model 700 SA that replaced it.

The .257 roberts is designed to fit in a factory remington short action. However if you use a long action you can seat your bullets out further and take advantage of more case capacity.

I just discoverd that the 722 was produced in .257 roberts from the factory, so it must work prety well.
If I can get back to the hawk shop that has it (they work the same hours I doo) And I can get it for say 325.00 I,ll but it. and make a .257 roberts AI...tj3006

I hope I read your post correctly. To put a .257 Roberts in the 722 action you will have to rebarrel it to a .257 caliber barrel. 300 Savage and the 308 Winchester are both 30caliber but the 257 is a 25 caliber. you will need to match your barrel to the desired caliber. I hope I didn't misunderstand and stuck my nose where it might get bent.

Why not just leave it as a .300 Savage?
That would be a real neat bolt gun and the old Savage is actually an under appreciated creature that makes a great deer round or short range elk round. I've always been a big fan of finding oddball chamberings in bolt rifles that really belonged on something else.
Just a thought?
