Questions for the experts:

I am re-finishing the factory stock on my M70 safari express. I have already stripped, added ebony tip and skeleton grip. I have searched the forum for the proper steps to include a stain/filler without success. Could you please provide the proper steps for:
Stain/filler, sealing and finish to include re-cutting the checkering. I am planning on using French Red stain and filler combination with a True Oil rubbed finish. I am assuming that the stain/filler must be applied prior to sealing. However I am not sure how our when to re-checker.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Complete the finish before you rechecker. Keep in mind you are trying to point up machine checkering which is not displaying first class work. The diamonds are for from perfect. If you use the stain and filler you would be wise not to sand between coats since you will inevibly remove some stain and have a "streaky" finish. I suggest you search the forum for finish methods as this has been covered. Thank Jim,

Would you suggest to re-stain after checkering? I am assuming this would remove the stain from the checkering.

You will need to add a little stain and thin finish back to the checkering after you have completed the recheckering. That is why I like to have my stain in the final finsh I use. What you don't want to do is put so much finish in the checkering you fill up the grooves. I have various finishes with alkanet root in them to add color. Stain color, of course, is a matter of choice. Good luck!

As suggested a Light ( thinned down finish over checkering maybe two coats ? ) Then tape off checkered area proceed with the stocks finish possibly a final thinned down overall coat so as to blend any taped areas ?.

It's some what depends on material selected for finish . BOL ... archer archer archer
