Thickness of barrel wall out by the muzzle?

Last year I had a gunsmithing firm shorten the barrel on a Marlin 336 to 18.5". They moved the front barrel band back and to accomodate the barrel band screw they had to file a channel in the bottom of the barrel and the top of the magaxine tube about 2" back from the muzzle.

I had reason to remove the band and tube and the channel they filed looks as though the barrel wall must be fairly thin at that spot.

The barrel OD is 0.671, OD inside the channel is 0.571 meaning the cahnnel is 0.100 deep.

The gun is a .35 Rem with micro groves, best I can measure the ID in the grooves is 0.355.

0.671 - 0.355 = 0.216 Ã· 2 = 0.108 wall thickness, minus .100 channel depth = 0.008 wall thickness at the channel.

Cause for worry? I've put about 20 rounds through it, nothing out of the ordinary but still, I'm concerned.

Anyone know how thin the wall is on an unaltered barrel at that spot?

.671 - .355 = .316 / 2 = .158 per side - .100 = .058. Still pretty thin. Document it, let them know and keep your eye on it. You will probably be okay.

heh, someone drag out their parker hale 458 win barrel and measure wall thickness... you will be FLOORED at how thin
