To all, Just talked with a fella who said he has been using Acraglas to install the barrel band swivel studs on rifle barrels with good success. Have any of you tried this? If so, how do they hold up? If it works well, seems like alot less trouble then using Hi-Force 44 or the like. What are your opinions? Thanks! 50

it works.. not my fav... get the band cherry hot, and then PLACE it on the barrel in alignment... .immediately tap it (2x4 with a deadfall) while still hot... it should never come off jeffe

I have it from good authority that the stuff to use (on a well fit barrel band or band front sight) is a locktite product for mounting steel cylinder liners to aluminum motor blocks. It's been tested on some hard recoiling rifles(up to 505 Gibbs). Sorry, I don't have a product #. I am going to try my red thread(stud and bearing mount). These locktites should do the trick because they are made to withstand heat. It's also very thin and cleanup should be easy. The plus for me is that I can engrave sights and bands without having to hold the entire barrel in my vise.

Scrollcutter, I have always used Loctite 680 for retaining valve guides. I think it would hold barrel bands very well. It is relatively thick and green, is this the stuff you are thinking of? It is anearaoic (spelling??) meaning it cures in the absence of air, which means any excess left-overs on the outside of the barrel would just wipe-off without any hassle. I let it cure for a 1 and 1/2 though on engines before use. ASS_CLOWN

Chic, you know the story about the kid and the blacksmith right? where hte ferrier gets the shoe red hot, works it, then sits it down to anneal? the kid comes over about 3 mins later, picks up the shoe with his bare hands... then drops the shoe like instantly... the smith says "see, son, you don't know everything... that shoe was still too hot to touch, even though it was red hot" the kid replies "no sir, you see, it just doesn't take ME long to look at a horseshoe" LMAO

How's this for an answer: I once had to remove a banded front sight from a barrel. It was attached, by me, with acraglass gel. 2600 degrees fahrenheit (MAPP torch) and a ball peen hammer later, I finally had the mother off. I think it would stand up to hunting use. Install it after you blue, and use black dye for the 'glass. Wipe off squeeze-out with acetone. Chic, I have been fighting this almost irresistable urge to pack up and ship to you some of my most prized possessions. Stop the freakin' voodoo, ok? Check your PMs for a special time-limited offer.
