Jim, I thought one of the changes in the 70 was the trigger over the 54. Anyway Timney says: The model 401 brings Timney Trigger quality to the fabled Model 70 (pre and post 64). The 401 is adaptable to the Model 54 by building up the cocking piece to Model 70 contour. As to the factory trigger I have no clue As usual just my $.02 Paul K

thanks, paul..i got a '54 winchester over the weekend that has a canjar trigger... feels fantastic, but the wing safety doesnt work (as far as i can tell)...and the bolt release has been changed... i'd like for the safety to work.. and tip is busy until mid march at least... i was going to gather up a few parts if i could... go big or go home ........ The first issue with the M54 is that they had three differnt firing pins, depending on when it was made. The first two slow locks, ( same cocking cam as the 1903 Spr ) will not interchange with the later ( about 1932 ) speed lock that became the M70 cocking cam. Ed Lapour can make a new firing pin / cocoking piece if needed. RE the trigger, the M54 slot is wider, so two shims need to be made to keep the M70 trigger lined up side to side. Also the M70 has the angled cocking piece sear face, while the M54 has the 90 degree sear face of the 1903 Spr. It sounds to me that the cocking piece was only partly fitted to the Canjar trigger. But as there is very little metal on the cocking piece behind the sear face, that is going to require welding, or a new cocking piece or firing pin. J Wisner
