I reacently purchased a Ruger 22/45 MKIII and was trying to dissasemble it after the first range session. I had it all appart, then was begenning to put it back together. All was going well until I had to put the mainspring housing back in the rear of the grip. There is a cylinderical peice that is suppose to lock into the frame and then continue into the upper, and it will appear behind the rear site. Anyway I was trying to put this whole assembly back in and the cylinderical peice slipped foward while I was tapping it with a mallet. Now I have the mainspring stuck in the rear of the pistol and I can't get it out. I have tried everything I can think of... and I still can't get this mainspring back out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent about 2 hours already and I can't figure it out for hte life of me!

Try One of these!!! Just kidding. If all else fails call Ruger tommorow, they will be sure to help you out. Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent. DRSS .470 & .500

To assemble the gun, you slip the bolt in place, tip the gun forward and pull the trigger to allow the hammer to lay in the fired position. This allows the hammer strut to swing free. Next you will slip the mainspring housing assembly pin up and through the rear of the bolt, and then you carefully guide the hammer strut, by rotating and manipulating the angle of the gun, so that it slides into it's channel/groove in the mainspring house. Then you seat the mainspring and set the latch. Pull the slide, cock the hammer and test the assembly by dry firing the gun. Sounds like the hammer strut might be hung up on the cross pin that holds the sear spring in place. Try to get the hammer to move far enough forward so that the mainspring housing can swing back out of the frame. In practice it is easier to do than explain. You should take it to a gunsmith and have him show you what you did wrong so that you can avoid it in the future. That is what I would do were you my customer. No Charge!

Thanks for the help Malm! I hate to admit it but I was so furious I set the pistol down and procailmed I was done with it. My girfriend promptly walks up to the pistol and assembles it. Turns out the ruger directions want you to have a magazine in it to put the mainspring in.... but they fail to mention that. Anyway, It appears I have a gunsmith for a girlfriend and only broken pride to show for it Thanks for your help guys!

Hello, I am going thru this problem right now with my pistol. I have the mainspring worked out but I have a question about the sear spring. does the spring arm go under the sear spring stop. Meaning is it between the magazine housing and the sear spring stop. thanks John

Yes, the long leg of the sear spring is held in place by the cross pin.

I gave up disassembling it. I just shoot it. If it ever stops shooting, I'll call your girlfriend. George
