Mauser Sporterizing Questions

I have many questions. I'll limit this post to a couple. I plan to sporterize my Yugo 24/47.

Right now I am going to alter the bolt to clear the scope. I think I'll buy a decent looking bolt handle and have it welded on.

Not sure about what safety to use. I don't like the M70 style three position safety.
Not familiar with the other choices/styles. I'd like to have a safety that can be installed by me, but that isn't an absolute.
Anyone familiar with the Bold Trigger that comes with a safety?

What scope bases look classic/good on a Mauser Sporter?

Right now I plan to do what it takes to get it up and shooting in 8x57. But I'm not going to cut corners in having the work done. I'll do small bits at a time and do it right. Probably take years but I'll be worth the wait.

Thanks in advance

There is two great looking bolt handles that I have used and one is Brownell's and one is Dakota's. I'll see if I can find some photos later.

About safeties: If you don't like the M-70 three position style there is also the Wisner two positiion style and a couple "up-down" style like the Buehler and Dayton Traister. All of these remove the firing pin from the firing mechanism and are true safeties.

Such devices as side safeties as the trigger mounted (see current Zastava) or Timney and Bold safeties are only trigger blocks and personally I'd keep away from them for that reason. They also require a section of stock to be inletted that looks poor if another safety is installed later.

You can install Weaver style bases or "turn-in" bases such as Millet, Leupold, Redfield etc. It's all a matter of what you like.

There's no way to do it cheap so do it right. Most on this forum also would advise to have it heat treated as well.

Another safety that you might consider, in addition to the ones Vapodog mentioned, if you can find one, is an FN safety. they operate from the left and block the firing pin.

I have used several Bold triggers with the side safety and find that, as far as letoff goes, they are just fine. My recommendation is that you go with the non-safety trigger and use the Dayton-Traistor, Buehler, FN safety. It makes for a cleaner looking stock and those above mentioned safeties are real firing pin blockers and not just trigger blocks. The FN installs (on the left side) without any alteration to the bolt shroud and I think that is also true of the Buehler safety (right side) but, my preference is the Dayton-Traistor.

Try a two position safety from Jim Kobe and
mate it with a Timney Sportsman trigger.

The Dave Talley bolt handle from Brownell's looks great on the mauser action.

A lot of it really does come down to personnal preference. I think some of the classiest scope mounts that can grace a mauser are German style Claw Mounts.

I like trigger safety's for the ability to take the gun off safe while maintaining sight picture and shooting position, too, despite the fact they don't lock the firing pin. I have a bold trigger with safety on my .308 Mauser and I like it a lot.

I also like the Dakota bolt handle and the Brownells bolt handle. I went with the Dakota.

I used standard Leupold bases and rings for FN Mauser. The rear base hung over the rear bridge and needed filing because I was using an intermediate length action (like yours). So I'd pick a different one next time.

Hope this helps,

Steve

I like the weaver grand slam steel mounts. They look like Warne/weaver mounts.

I have used Mark Skaggs to do Sporter projects and have been very happy. His pricing usually beats everyone else by a mile and his turn around is really fast:

He'll do as much or as little as you want done.

Zeke,
I have installed the Weaver Alluminum #46 and #45 on surplus 98 Mausers, and like you, I thing they are not as nice as the steel #46 and #45.

I have been drilling and tapping with a Wheeler drill and tap fixture and a drill press. It is much faster and more idiot proof than the milling machine.
