I am building a three barrel set for a takedown BLR. The original is a stainless steel barrel with a laminated forearm with a barrel band. I have a second wooden forearm without a barrel band. The two additional barrels are blued steel. I want the barrels to look as different as possible to prevent a mix up.

My problem is that, for the 338 win mag barrel, both forearms are about 1/16" too long from the forearm screw to the receiver, preventing an easy lock up of the takedown lug. Both forearms work for the (post rebore) 375 barrel and the 300 win mag barrel.

My question is: Can I just sand down a laminated forearm to fit? Does it sand like wood? Or should I buy a second wood forearm with a barrel band and sand that to length? Thanks for the advise, I have never worked with wood laminates.

Sanding Lam just takes a little bit more time due to the glue that holds the layers together. Worth noting is ... either wood should be sanded at a perfect 90 degree angle with fresh sandpaper to make a nice job. 90 degree bench top belt sanders do nice work if you are steady enough to keep the piece aligned side to side. Go slow, end grain burns easily at that angle and it will leave carbon deposits on the belt if you don't take your time.
