I have a old custom mauser , that has claw
mount bases and rings. The rear " ears" on
the claw mount do not want to slide foward
or rearward . Is there a set screw that
locks these ears in position , or are they
just tough ? I don't want to force anything .

I did notice a set screw on top of the left
hand ear ?

I assume these ears have to slide rearward ,
to free up the claws now inside the base .

Thanks Bob

There should´t be any screw so carefully tapping with wooden mallet and stick would help.

Most likely siezed. Soak in rust loosening lubricant. Ensure that you can move the thumb slides in and out. Then try moving in rear direction. I would avoid taping with a "persuader" as you're going to cause damage. Last resort...remove mount from receiver, dismantle and clean up crud.

If you are referring to the nurled bits on the sides of the rear base, they may be spring loaded and need to pressed in so that the locking lugs inside the base retract and the rear ring hooks are engaged when the spring is released. I had an old Austrian semi custom Mauser with a set up like that.

I hope I have understood your post right and this helps.

Thanks for the info guys , I got
the sliders to work rearword and the
claws released . They just appear to be
really tight. Without the claws engaged
they seem to work free and easy .
