maxbearWow, What a marvelous peice of craftsmanship. I really like that stock pattern. The combination of checkering and carving is wonderful.
This is definatley not something I see everyday.
Thanks for posting the photo's.

vigillinusA wall hanger .... low number action. Made between the World Wars. There are people who value these - not me.

DMBI certainly admire those older sporters, and I'd love to have that rifle. But, I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it.

jeffeosso"cigerette rifle".. there's lots and lots of these floating around for mausers, and the springfield isn't THAT far off, in terms of the work that would be required...
i wouldn't pay alot for it, it's not my favorite.

How do you figure its a low number receiver? All the Rock Islands over 285507 were of the new heat treat method. And the Springfields started with 800,001.
Nice rifle.

Yup, and I clearly misread it, thinking it was in the 964,XXX range. A little early still.
Now if I could figure out what that abomination of a sentance you wrote means?

tin canI believe there was a time, the 20's, maybe, when Springfields were sent to Germany to be sporterized, then returned to the customer here.
If so, perhaps this is one of them- the rear sight reminds me of such a thing.
Vague recollection...

Michael PetrovMy first impression of the rifle is "Buy It".I'm backed up with projects but let me do some digging. Could I see a picture of the buttplate please. Can you tell me the barrel date?
You might drop me a note at mjpetrov@acsalaska.
Check your PM's.

vigillinusIt would probably be easy enough to substitute a double heat treat action for that low number hand grenade and you would have a very nice rifle ..... unpolluted by the usual monstrous Germanic high mounted scope sight.

She looks like a very nice piece of history to me. I would proudly own her and shoot her with no worry at all. Hopefully your buddy will decide to sell her to you!

NitromanNice, elegant rifle. The Europeans have always been spot on when stocking a rifle.
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Albert Einstein

Mine too. Back off about 10% on your loads and have fun. And don't mutilate the rifle with alterations.
