Conversion on a Model 70
How difficult would it be to convert a pre-64 Model 70 .30-06 to a .458 Lott or something similar? THe action is good and unaltered.

jeffeossojut to say it, it would be far cheaper to get an MRC barreled in 458 lott, and I would imagine you would come out with $$ in pocket.
200 barrel
200 sights
150 barrel install
350 gunsmithing
400 bottom metal (optional)
150 bluing
MRC- about 700 bucks for barreled action +sights and bluing

ramrod340If you go without sights then you good get a barrel, installed action opened and blued from ITD for around $450+/- One thing to think about is the 30-06 if a fairly light rifle. If you use the same stock you are going to have a very light if not nose heavy rifle. A 458 Lott would get your attention.
For only a couple $100 more you can get a CZ and have the size and weight that better suits the Lott.

SnowwolfeMRC barreled action will run you about $900 (stainless). $100 less if your an FFL holder. CM is slightly cheaper but then you need to add the cost of the finishing.
I have a 458 Lott that Biesen built for me on a pre-64 Mod 70 30-06 action. He opened the action and it works well. I did have a problem with the magazine box. He used a pre-64 375 H&H magazine box. This box tapers toward the front and would not take full length cartridges. I had to shorten the cases by 1/10". Sort of partially defeats the purpose of a 458 Lott. Also the factory 375 box is made of rather thin metal and recoil cause the rounds in the magazine to badly batter the front of the box. I had a custom box made with less taper and of heavier metal.
