I have an m98 which uses the small ring bases, but according to some gunsmith it is not a small ring mouse, the thread is that of a normal m98 not a small ring, another told me it is a small ring because of the scope mount. Is it possible for an older m98 action to use bases for the small ring but is a normal m98 Thanks

Mauser ID's can be quite confussing. First off measure the diameter of the receiver ring. Large ring diameter is 1.410" whereas small is 1.300". Dimensions may vary slightly if reprofiled or ground however these dimensions will put you in the ball park for most Mausers. If out of the stock...examine the left side of the receiver. On the small ring the side is straight including the part at the bridge and on the large ring there is a discernible jump where the walls merge with the receiver ring. Early 98a carbines and the later G33/40 are built to small ring dimensions . Barrel shank on large ring is 1.100" diameter and .625" long, 12v TPI whereas the small ring is .980" diameter .645" 12v TPI. Some exceptions here...G33/40 .980" x .625" x 12v TPI and the Siamese .990" x .515" x 14v TPI. All 98 Mausers are 7.825" c/c on their mounting holes.

small ring bases can be put on a large ring, but it won't quite touch in the center. You can give it full contact by using a spotting compound and files, scrapers, whatever to get full contact. Large ring front scope mounts screw down on small rings and touch in the center, but the sides of the front base are un supported. It will work, but is not th emost solid set up out there. With the use of tools and spotting compound you can achieve full fit for base to ring. In actuality, you could screw either base on either reciever ring and it would work as-is. Would not be the most solid set up out there, but would still be worlds more solid that see-through mounts or other regular mounts with their sloppy fit. THere is variability in Mauser ring dimensions, and a HUGE variability in base dimensions. I would say that scope rings and bases are overwhelmingly the least precise gunparts manufactured today. Given how close the 2 Mauser reciver rings are in size, and how loose most bases are manufactured, sometimes the mixed pairs come very, very close to fitting without having to scrape them in.
