Has anyone used Howard Wolfe, gunsmith from Mifflinburg, PA for any work? I know he's supposed to be really well thought of in benchrest circles (someone told me he's written up in Sierra's manual on benchrest shooting), but, my main concern is time.

He's had a 700 of mine since March, and all he's doing is re-chambering from 7x57 to .280 Rem.

Maybe it's taking so long because he's so good and he's overloaded. Or maybe he's just slow.

Thanx,
R-WEST

R-WEST,

If he is truly that well known in Benchrest circles then he is taking care of them first as do most Benchrest gunsmiths. Their season is coming to an end so he will probably be getting to your barrel soon. Have you tried to contact him? Did he give you a time frame in the beginning? This time frame can happen when you send something to a specialist.

Bill

He does a good job but is very slow. The funny thing is that the work you described
only takes a few hours. I would call him and rattle the cage a bit. I had a gunsmith rechamber a rifle while I waited! Whole thing took 2 hours and this was a very reputable, benchrest gunsmith.

I tried a new smith for my latest project involving rechambering/rebluing. The bbl/action has been in his shop for two months and I have heard nothing from him. Sent him an e-mail with no response. I had several rifles built in the late '80's by a smith in Pa, now retired. It took not more than six weeks including shipping from Utah to Pa. Are gunsmiths that much busier now? Slower? Better??
