HarrisPros/ Cons of this mauser
http://mauser.org/rifles/german_k98/index.htm I am thinking about a mauser project in .30-06 or .308 and I was wonedring if this might be a good platform to start with.
This is what I have in mind
1) Douglas or Shilen barrel in # 3 sporter contour
2) Deep blue
3) Three or two position M70 Style safety
4) New trigger
5) New bolt handle
6) Polishing the receiver
What would you do if you had $1000 to spend on metalwork not including the cost of the action?
The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.

PoleaxUnless you plan on open sights you might want to consider a D&T job (drill & tap).
Save yourself some money and buy Cummins cowboy's 98/22. He'll be happy and you'll save a ton on the action.

craigsterI would suggest starting with a nice VZ 24 instead.

jeffeossobuy a daly action, and start from there.. the base price is the SAME and you get a much better place to start a custom from.

That comes close to the $1000 and you still don't have bottom metal that is hinged!!!
Personally.....I'd never again build a Mauser without the 3-Pos safety.....there's no way to do it cheap and the 3-pos is a marvelous addition.
Mitchel's is not the place to start!!!...you can get a fine action for far far less!!!

Marc_Stokeldthe biggest problem I see is that Mitchell Mausers charges at least 3X what a Mauser action would cost anywhere else. I have never understood how he gets so many sold at that price, but he does. You can still pick up full Mauser rifles with desireable actions for ~$100. Just be patient and shop around and you can find one in a couple of weeks.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with buying a Mitchell Mauser. But you will throw away $200 that you could spend on the rest of the action. And for that you get an action that is less desirable to boot!

fla3006I'd rather have GSP7's rifle or something similar for around the same price, like a Higgins FN, etc.

BuliwyfI like the idea of a Control Round Feed .30-06 Springfield. I recommend beginning with a:
1. Commercial FN Mauser
2. Browning Safari Grade Long Extractor
3. Pre '64 Winchester M70
4. Winchester M70 Classic
Shoot one of these for a while then consider your custom project.

I would find an FN commercial. JC Higgins Sears m50. You should be able to find one for under $500. I then would strip it to the receiver and bolt and do everything you had listed to do plus hinged bottom metal.

z1rMe,
I'd start with a good milsurp action. Then decide what you HAVE to have in the way of accoutrements. Obviously you need a new safety. Ed Lapour's is nice. Do you really need hinged bottom metal?? It's pricey for the good stuff. I wouldn't mess with the cheap stuff. It's uglier than the issue guard.

jstevensA comml FN will be the nicest action for the money as som others have said. It still needs a M70 style safety however.
