which action to choose?

I have the opportunity to buy a true Magnum lenght action from a friend. One is a Brevex 400 action and the other is a RSA clone of the Orberndorf Magnum 20 by Vektor. The Brevex had a better name recognition but is not a single C cut action. The Vektor action is as well finished but is a double square bridge with single C cut. This will be for a 416 Rigby custom or another 505 Gibbs. Which one to choose? I think the Vektor is the better but the Brevex has name recognition?????

Easy answer, buy both, then you can have both the 416 and the 505.

this is always a fun discussion......so I'll have a go at it.....

I wouldn't put much in the "H" verses "C" ring argument.....Only when all other issues come to a tie....then the "C" ring will win out.....but look to other features you like first.

Unless there is a very large price difference, I also would not consider that.....this is going to go into a very expensive gun in the end...

Buying both is the very best solution as both are valuable.

Vektor is an outstanding action and a real shame it is no longer manufactured, but if you can only afford one, buy the Brevex because name recognition under-pins value.

I would go with the Vector if it were my choice. Not really sure what name recognition has to do with it, or who you are concerned about recognizing the name of the action you use. And if some one does know of one brand, they will likely know of the other. Odds are most folks will have heard of neither.

But I am still at a loss to see where name recognition matters in any way.

Buy both if they are reasonably priced. I'm currently working on a 500A2 on a Brevex, but I've had it a long time.

Well, I don't know if I go along with that "value" issue in this particular case.

One action may cost more and therefore if you ever want to sell you might get more for it. On the other hand, the other action might cost less and if you want to sell it you might get less.

But in this particular case, knowing just a little bit about the buyer Smiler I think that the buyer isn't buying these actions and having these guns made in order to sell them, but rather to enjoy the fruits of his labors!

The buyer knows darn well that custom guns are often a money losing proposition in the sense that if you buy and sell them you often are on the wrong end of the margin. But on the other hand there is a lot of VALUE that is not measured in dollars and cents when dealing with building these high end custom guns.

From your post IB it seems like you are pretty much a guy that likes the C ring type mausers, and I am betting that if you bought that H ring mauser and built a custom on it the fact that it was H ring would nag at you for as long as you had it.

Get the Vektor Leonard and never look back!!!!

$2500 is pretty close to what both of those actions are worth in the marketplace today. Neither are commonplace however so take that into account if you pass on them. I think you could at least get your money back if your plans changed.

SDH,

Are you refering to steel that the Brevex action is made from?

I have no personal experience but, as I understand it is rather hard to work on...?

A vanadium type steel I believe?

Regards,
Dave

No, I simply believe in asking the guy whose going to do the work, "What would you prefer?"
