This is sort of a discussion of changing times. It harkens back to a time when not everybody had a good deer rifle. A decent shooting rifle in any configuration had worth. Now, we are awash in decent bolt guns. How many to you have which would qualify as "Deer rifles"? 5, 10, 15, 20?? This brings back memories of trying to find a deer rifle to go hunting with, and then trying to find ammo for it.

I remember Sears and Montgomery Ward, as well as many hardware stores, having barrels of surplus rifles for $13-20 U-pick. You could also order them by mail. Guess that ages me!

FYI for those that are suggesting a caliber change.

The rifle is currently chambered for 6.5-257. Meaning it is a 257 roberts case necked down to 6.5mm the case length is 2.23 or about 57MM.

I cleaned it once again with Sweets last night took a good look at the rifling and i just might give it a go.
I appreciate all the advice I think we might get some ammo for it and see what happens Worse come to worse he needs a new gun anyway.

A friend of mine (who is no longer with us) had a Type 38 Arisaka that had been custom built into a rather handsom .308 sporter. It shot like a house a fire, and was a handy little thing that one could pack in the woods all day.

As mentioned, the Arisaka is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, bolt action actions ever made by man. I have six of them, and I like them all.

Regarding some of the earlier posts refering to the "japs" in a less than civil manner. Yes, during the 2nd World War, some of them did things generally considered unacceptable by civilized folks. However, did we not burn thousands of them in tunnels with flame throwers? That's pretty uncivilized. Didn't we fire bomb hundreds of thousands of civilians? Humm, that's pretty uncivilized too.

War is uncivilized, people die, on both sides. Get over it.

Message from Tallil, Iraq.

Heck. I kind of have a soft spot for them too, one in 6.5x.257 being my first big-game rifle. If the barrel is gone, and/or he wants to get rid of the gun, let me know. Maybe we can work out a deal.

I made a sizing die in the garage today and resized some 7X57 brass. No I need to source some bullets and load them up and see if this thing can hit the broad side of a barn.

Weaveman. Thanks for the head's up. I did read it from the beginning, but somehow I missed the already re-rechambered part. Thank you for letting me know.

If it is already re-chambered, then especially as I see he has now made a die to load rounds with, I will just wait and watch for his shooting results. I hope his barrel is still good, as he now has a dandy cartridge. In that configuration the round will do anything the 6.5x55 or .260 will do...and perhaps a bit more.

Best wishes,

AC

I have an Arisaka that has a beutiful bore and it shoots bugholes at 75 yds. It hits 10 inches high but little itty bitty groups w/ some old Norma ammo I picked up at a gun show. My buddy's step dad left it to him and he didn't want it so he gave it to me. The bore looked horrible and then I ran some patches through it, 50 years of dust and grease came out. The bore was awesome.

My first deer rifle was a 6.5 carbine that I removed the sights from cut the stock back myself and had drilled and tapped. Used it for about 5-6 years. With a little Lee loader and scoop of powder it would group about 1.5". Wasn't pretty but worked fine.

Then a backyard smith (me Frowner) twisted the crap out if it trying to remove the barrel.

As usual just my $.02

Well were going to give it a shot this weekend
I'll see if this thing can hit the broad side of a barn. The bore after a good second cleaning doesn't look to bad now that i now what I'm looking at.
She just might be salvageable.

Contrary information a 6.5X57 is to a 6.5X257 as a 7X57 is to a 257.

Thought the Type 99s had the chrome bore . . .
It will take a bit of research on the original designs to figure these out.

Myself it is, "To each their own" as I like my sporterized Type 38 as much or better that my M70, Mauser, Husky, but is as much our history together and the way I like the big clunky stock on it as anything.

We are all probably much better off NOT knowing what the milsurp rifle in our hands had done during its lifetime no matter the manufacture.

and we engage in shooting, etc., because we enjoy it- I've noticed that the look of an ugly rifle improves when it shoots well, or is just plain fun and/or satisfying to use.

I have one I bought for $30 that was D&T and the bolt handle bent, the stock had been sporterized with a handsaw and 4 line to the inch checkering with a pocketknife. I spray painted the stock black to complete the uglyness. But! I make some money with it every once in awhile as with cases formed from 35 rem brass ( or reg jap brass) and a 140 sierra it will put 5 shots under an inch every time. An easy money bet against the dumb shits who think they can actually shoot their Remchesters ect.
I have another that had a nice redfield peep installed, I cut the barrel to 16 1/2" made the stock into a mann. style, butterknife bolt and rechambered to 260 rem. Very handy, fun truck gun.
One thing that halps looks a little..... I grind the safety knob down to a smaller dia. Seems to me, to streamline it a bit.
