Hi all, I have a Remington 700ADL in 270 Win that I'd like to change out to a 243 Win. Is this do-able?. I know there is a Short Action 700 made for the shorter cartridges but here in South Africa they are are not available.

Pete"

I have one exactly like it, (except a BDL) and it works perfectly.

Terry,

Cool! What calibre was it before you made it into a 243, or was it always a 243?

Thanks

pete

It was a 30-06.

I bought a used 243 barrel one day, and decided I needed to shoot it. So put it together.

Had lots of 243 ammo and bullets, so now using it for practice.

Other than the magazine being longer than necessary (and the extra weight and length of the action), there is no problem with using the 700 long action for a .243, .308, or similar cartridge. You might (or might not) find it desirable to replace the floorplate with a shorter one and block a half-inch or so at the rear of the magazine. Blocking (shortening) the magazine probably isn't necessary.

You might also want to consider chambering for the longer 6mm Remington (.244 Remington). It is based on the longer 57mm Mauser case and can utilize the longer magazine a little better than the .243. It might get you 100 fps extra velocity, if that's of interest to you.

The standard magazine box allows you seat bullets out as far as you like which really brings the 244 Rem case into its own.

Is it easy to make 6mm Rem cases out of 7X57, just a straight resize and fireform? Because 6mm Rem Cases are unheard of down here.

I like the suggestion!! 100fps extra is good!

Yes!

As others have already told you, it will work well; however, I would strongly encourage you to take a very close look at chambering in 260 Remington instead. Bullet selection in 6.5mm is second to none and in a long action you can make the cartridge really sing. Not much bigger than a 243 but a whole lot more versatile.

Well, if you are going to 6.5 then why not 6.5x55

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Now we are starting to climb back up to the 270!!! LOL!!

I am really looking for something lying between my 22-250 and my 7X64, that I can use for springbok hunting and SAHRSA competition shooting. The 22-250 is good on a calm day, but goes to pieces in the wind, while the Brenneke is just too much gun for the job at hand, and expensive to run.

The 6mm Rem sounds very appealing, especially now that brass is not an issue.

Now I must look for a decent 6mm barrel, shouldn't be too hard to find.....

6mm / 06 just neck size all of that 270 brass you have. A lovely wildcat. 240 Wby Mag performance and cheap brass.

Smiler

If you're going to fireform cases from 7x57 anyway, go to the 6mm rem AI. It will give you a little extra fps and longer case life too.
