Just wondering. There were quite a few posts lately about cleaners.
I've tried it straight up and man do I get a wierd metallic smell and black patches.

Latelely I've wet the patch with Kroil and then dabbed on some flitz--not sure if I'm just making a "witches brew" or what but I do think it cleans and polishes.

I called a Flitz rep a while back and he claimed olympic shooters were using it in their 22 caliber rifles.

Any thoughts on this??

I have tried this and the other more common abrasive cleaner (JB Bore Cleaner), and the old Gold Medallian which became Rem Clean. Can't say as where it isn't to fine an abrasive for a custom barrel, but I would use it all day long as necessary in a factory rough tube. Heck the sooner they wear out the sooner they get replaced with an accurate tube! Bottom line is to be careful not to over do it with the abrasives. Most of the "professional" posts I have read alude to the grit finer than 800 or so being to fine and causing fouling.

Some one did a test buffing a piece of metal for a test and flitz was more abrasive polishing than JB. I think it was something I saw about polishing chambers. Id use it on a factory barrel to polish the bore .

I heard a while back that Ed SHilen used it a lot. Can't say whether or not it was true. You might try this sight and post that question there.

kraky,

Through the years I have used Flitz, Mothers, JB and the old Cam Metal Polish which was taken over by the Wax Shop and then separated again so it makes it almost impossible to find......it makes me so damn mad when they do that.....sorry for the rant.

Anyhow, I have used it on factory and some very fine custom barrels and can't find any problems with the practice. Every year after pd shooting I polish the bores of my customs, I polish the bore of every factory gun that I clean. Can't prove that they clean easier or stay cleaner but I think they do clean easier. This summer we ran several Savage 22-250s well over 100 rounds on pds before cleaning without any loss of accuracy. Can't say if this has anything to do with polishing the bore, but......??? bewildered

If you are concerned about removing too much metal, take a piece of scrap steel and put a very light scratch in it and then try to polish the scratch out.

I mix a little Flitz and Hoppes #9 and it does a great job on dirty barrels.

I also push a lot of patches with Flitz on them thru a NEW barrel before ever firing a shot.

Breach to muzzle, a min of 50 strokes, one way only.

I used it on my .308 Win after deer season. Really got the copper fouling out fast, and didn't seem to affect accuracy.

Still not sure I would use it on my "nice" barrels, but with the rough one it didn't seem to hurt.
