Hi All,

My gunsmith proposed to improved .458 Win Mag in re-chambering my CZ rifle with .416 Rem brass in full lenght (2.83" to 2.85") neck up to use bullet .458. But what is the name of this caliber? What is the closer caliber that you know comparing my gunsmith proposal? Can I continu to fire .458 Win after re-chambering? Whatis reload data for this cartridge? Thanks to help me.RGDS. BER007

That would be the .458 Lott.

Yes, you can fire .458 Winchester Magnum in this chamber.

Search the Forum Archives, check the reloading pages at AccurateReloading.com,
perform a Google search on "458 Lott", get "Wildcat Cartridges of the World, Vol. II), etc.

With a slight neck, its the .450 Ackley, with a straight taper its the .45O Watts, if its straight taper and 2.800 its a .458 Lott. The .458 Winchester is ok for occasional firing in the Watts or Lott, but not recommended for a steady diet.

BER007,
Check the Big Bore thread. Back on 12/7 we had a good discussion going on about the Lott. That is what I am going to have my P-17 rebarreled for. Ray and some of the others gave some good load data.

Thanks to loud-n-boomer and to WyoJoe.Your replies were very useful. I'll go with case lenght 2.85" for re-chambering my CZ 550 Safari Mag into .458 Lott. My gunsmith told me there is no probelm with this rifle with maximum lenght case (2.85"). But it is more easier to reform .375 brass than .416 brass. And the difference of maximum powder load isn't so high. I haven't taken final decision of brass used. RGDS. BER007

The Lott is 2.800 otherwise it is not a Lott.

Some RSA company is making a 3.00 lenth chamber.

I would use a standard 458 lott 2.80 chamber, and then I can buy dies, trimmers and some marked brass..It's just handy. Why confuse the issue, if thats not enough then go with the Watts, Ackley.

Dear Atkinson,
You're right and I agree with you the .458 Lott is 2.80" lenght (and only this lenght). But the thing which confused me is lots of people call .458 Lott with other lenght 2.83" and 2.85" (Watts's lenght). When I will ask for my gunsmith to do the job on my CZ to have .458 Lott; I can go with a lenght of 2.85" for a .458 Lott or whatever you call it. According to replies received.

You know here in Europe, wildcat are not stream, it is very difficult to find the good the gunsmith who is able to do this job.
This is why I posted all these messages to inform myself on it and I thank all of you for that. RGDS. BER007
