I just use two pieces of rubber flooring material, cut to fit over the center of the vise (between the jaws). Has worked a charm for me for years.

Most of you have prolly seen a semi mudflap lying around at one time or another, they get broken off by small trailers sometimes and their rubber is pretty usefull for such things.
