I recently picked up a Remington 740 Woodsmaster .30-06 automatic in good condition. Found a load that it likes, for 1.5-2" groups or so, which should be sufficient for the relatively short ranges I got it for (an area where 200yds would be a loooong shot!). Got an old steel Weaver K-2.5 scope mounted on it, and its almost ready to go. I'd like to get a sling on it, as it doesn't have an sling swivels or studs mounted on it yet. Uncle Mikes lists a swivel/stud kit for the 740, 7400 series guns that uses a barrel band. I realize that this isn't exactly a high performance precision gun, but I kind of cringe at the thought of using a barrel band unless I have to. There are other kits for the 742 and whatnot that replace the fore-end retaining screw w/ a knurled knob and swivel stud, but it looks too long to fit a 740. What other options are there to mount a sling on this contraption, short of a barrel band? Thanks, Monte

I think I have seen a mount for the fore end nut at Wal Mart. It may be Uncle Mikes but it looked OK. Try 48gr IMR 4895 with 150gr Win flat base SP. It shoots MOA in my 742. It is about 2750 fps but it works.

Thanks for the reply. I checked Uncle Mike's web site, and the only thing they show for a 740 is a barrel band I do have a load using what I had laying around, namely H4831SC (60gr) and 180gr Nosler Partitions that groups reasonably well (sub 2 inch @ 100yds, and from what I've been told, that's about as good as it's likely to get, unless I get *real* lucky). I'll keep looking, but I have a hunch I'll probably be stuck w/ the barrel band, and just have to see if it messes things up any (shifting POI, etc.) Thanks again, Monte
