D9950 BMG take off barrel
I just picked up a 50 BMG from the armorers that's got a 1000 rounds through it, what would you do with it? It looks solid?
Rifling is fine, could I build a rifle around it?

jimmyd223D99, is this off a Barrett? I'm not sure but at one time Mark Sebru was sell just the 50 cal actions. Might check that source out.

fla3006My 510 Wells Mauser has a 30" BMG barrel that has been turned down. Very accurate with all bullets, even light cast lead.

tiggertateForrest, was that an M2 barrel? I bet it left 40 lbs of chips on the machine shop floor, LOL.

D99It's not off a M82 it's off the top off a HMVEE mounted 50 machine gun.
1000 rounds and we change them out.
Ideas?

fla3006Don't know Harry, it's still pretty heavy though, and the extra length in addition to the weight helps keep it manageable.

tiggertateFWIW, I picked up a surplus M2 barrel the other day and I would estimate it in the 45 lb range; another 45 or so for the action. I liked your barrel. It really hung out there pretty steady, even if I missed anyway!

tiggertateNo, damnit. Wish I did. I do have an extra McGowen .505 barrel I'd trade for a .510, though. When I said "picked up" I meant physically picked one up.

tiggertateGuilty as charged

.
I think they use both chain guns and the ever ready M2 heavy. Yes, a rifle can be built from either barrel.

I can't speak for all variants but most were 1-15.

1000 rounds doesn't sound like much to me, I'd cut it down to 25", mount it on a 1917 Enfield or maybe a BBK-02, chamber in 500A-2.

I think maybe 20". One way to light up the night!
Any wear at 1000 rnds is at the throat and that can go away when you re-contour, re-thread and re-chamber the barrel.

I like the way you think

A long throated 500 A2 produces 2/3 the velocity of a 50 bmg, and only burns 1/2 the powder to do so. From plinker loads with cast pistol bullets at 1100 fps, think giant 22 rf

to 690 gr ap @ 2200.
I finally decided that my 500 Jeffrey w/ 25" heavy contour barrel and long throat is going to be a tactical rifle vs making it a sporter. With a heavy stock and scope it'll be in the 13# range, which really takes the edge off the recoil.
