Just what can this action be converted into. Thought about a 250-3000, 243, or a 260 Remington? Don't know if it is possible or practiable to do. JIM

Jim, In the book"Bolt Action Rifles" the two recommended conversions are 7x57 and 257 Roberts. I think this is based on cartridge size and working pressure. Looking at the dimensions, other than length I don't know why the 250-3000 could not be included. I recently converted one to 7x57, in fact it just came back from bluing on saturday. Fairly tedious operation to remove metal from the flat area of the magizine well and relieve the rounded areas in the rear of the magizine to accomodate the larger case but nothing terribly difficult. That being said, the 6.5x54 is a fine cartridge and combined with the MS action can make a wonderfully light, versatle rifle. My reason for the conversion was because the action was not in that good of shape, I already had a 7mm barrel, reamer, 7x57 dies, brass and I needed a winter project.

Unless you use a wildcatted 6.5X54mm M/S case for your conversion, about all you can do is make it a single-shot! IF you try to use any cartridge with a larger head diameter than the 6.5X54mmM/S, you will have to alter the magazine, as the spool will not rotate with anything larger in it-the case head hits the box and stops the rotation. Some magazines may be worse than others in this dimension, however. ASs mentioned above, your magazine may be big enough to easily alter to hold a mauser size case head. Then a .250 Savage would be a good round for it! I was considering doing a .22/250 or a .250 Savage on one, and when I tried a couple of .22/250 cases in the magazine, I discovered this. About the only practical solution is to use 6.5X54mm M/S cases and neck them up or down if for some reason you don't want a 6.5mm. (Huntington's sells 6.5X54mm M/S Norma brass for about $39.00/100, and it's a good cartridge!!) Mine will feed 6.5X54 M/S cases with .277" and .284" bullets seated in them. I'm sure it would also work with .224", 243", and .257" bullets as well. But I think any bullet larger that .284" would cause problems with the bullet cutout in the front of the spool rotor. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."
