First off I'd like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and the best of hunting success in 2006! Now to my question... I have resigned myself, that after 3 yrs of looking, I'm not likely to find a Kimball vise. I will however, endeavor to persevere. In the meantime... what vise would you recommend for stock work mostly. I do very little metalwork other than making myself custom scrapers and the odd knife now and then. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Regards,
Brian

I have a parrot vise I bought from one of the woodworking online places for 40 bucks or so. Works pretty good for what it cost.

We just bought 2 of the same Vise Flaco list from woodcraft.com, the only difference being that that woodcraft model is green. They are very nice for stock work but having an additional support for long work is nice. Check out the NECG website and see how they modify they same vice and charge $200 more.
Woodcraft also sells a patternmakers vise that mounts on the side of a bench. I'd like to try one but I'm buying a 3rd of the "Flaco" style vise for home use 1st............DJ

....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

Just my opinion...but the modified vice from NECG is a rip-off. The $150.00 arm/brace does little more than get in the way most of the time.

I bought one a few years ago (when I didn’t know any better) and it didn’t take me long to remove that damned arm. I also have a Bisley rifle vice and I like it allot because of the ease of mounting it wherever I want to along my bench.

22WRF, I've got the first 2 coats of finish on what will probably be my new favorite rifle. I need to finish a little metal work (smoothing, polishing and bluing) and then finish finishing and checker it. If I don't get called of too soon on my real job I should have it done in a month (dry time mainly). I may do some in progress pics. It's a 9,3x62 on a Pre 64 Winchester, Oberndorf countoured Douglas barrel in an English Walnut stock.............DJ

Rick0311,
What's this Bisley vise look like - Any picts? Maybe I've seen these but don't know them by that name. My gunsmith has a Kimball and absolutely wouldn't part with it for the world!
