Remington 700 Extractor Problems

I want to replace the extractor in my just bought used 700. I want to go with the factory style. In the brownells catalog they seem to only sell the rivetless style. Is this a direct replacement for an extractor that was originaly held in with a rivet? The problem I'm having is the bolt is extremely hard to close. Several different brands of ammo have been tried. It just seems like it takes quit a bit of force to get the extractor over the rim of the cartridge. I've tried cleaning it out with solvent and air with no luck. Any advice?

Before you take the big step of replacing the extractor, make sure that it's the problem.

Strip the bolt. Insert the bolt and try it without any cartridges. Next try it with cartridges. If the problem is still there, remove the ejector. Repeat the test. If the problem is still there, make absolutely sure that you do not have any brass shavings behind the extractor. Solvent and air may not have gotten that little space clean.

Back in the dark ages, I was a Remington Warranty Gunsmith. Many times, the extractor is not concentric with the bolt face and will lead to a miscnception of all sorts of problems. Try an empty case, place it in the chamber and slowly close the bolt. If resistance is felt, examine the case to see if there is evidence of "shavings"...well, you can try a loaded round...just be careful. If shaving exist, you'll need a new extractor. These are not a piece of cake to install without distorting...riveting requires special tools and careful touch

Addendum: Personally, I like to install the SAKO type extractor and begone with lots of problems, but this will lead to a denial of warranty..your choice!

I got it fixed. There was indeed some crud behind the extractor. I got a little more aggresive with the air and solvent and I also polishisd the taper a bit. Works like a champ now. Thanks for the advise.
