I'm thinking of setting up my Krag as a scout rifle. The rifle has been sporterized already but the action hasn't been D&T for a scope and I don't want any holes put in it. I just mounted a Rice peep sight to the bolt shroud this morning, and will be removing the buckhorn sight. I'm thinking that if I mounted a Leupold FXII 2.5 Scout Scope with QRW rings this would make this rig almost ideal. So take a look at the pictures and tell me what you think.

I'll say I'm not a collector, if it is something that I can't bring myself to modify to what I want then I get rid of it. Id put the bases on it and be ready to go.

I think it would be a great idea. The Rice sight has long been my favorite for Krags and I like the Burris Scout QRW setup on my Winchester 1890 pump 22, it's far more accurate than you might think.

BTW the late great Jeff Cooper recommended the Krag w/Scout scope as being one of the 2 or 3 better Scout rifle setups, along with the 1903 Springfield. He liked the cartridge cutoff feature among other things.
Regards, Joe

Just don't want any holes in the receiver. Thinking a base could be milled to fit the rib where the buckhorn sight is. Just would like to know how much of a PITA it would be.

I thought so too, that is why when I saw this rifle in the pawn shop I had to take it home! Can't believe the previous owner let this one go. I had been looking for one of these for quite some time and I got a great deal on this one a hair under $300 out the door.

somebody is making a forward mount system, B-Square? The Krag would be perfect for a scout.

I've been looking at the XS Scout Scope Mount system. I would like to use the dovetail like they use on the Marlin and Winchester lever actions. Plus I'd like the mount to set as low as possible over that rib as I'm worried about the heel drop and getting a good sight picture with a scope.

Checked B-Square and they don't make a mount for the Krag. However, since this isn't the original mount for the rear sight even if B-Square made one it wouldn't work without modifications. I'm not worried about D&T the rib that the rear sight is mounted on already. Just want somthing that will look well thought out when mounted on the rifle.

Send it to a smith and have a quarter rib installed with talley bases installed on the rib.
I have a design for a scope base for the Krag but it requires Drill and tapping the receiver

Always wanted one for a shooter; I'd keep the aperture sight and scout the buckhorn base somehow. I've never understood scouts with (1)no irons, and (2)drop magazines.
