Has anyone converted a Ruger Redlabel so that the shotgun does not automatically go from "off safe" to "on safe" when the action is opened???

I also use a Beretta O/U and it does not automatically reset the safety. Gets confusing in the field.

Old Elk Hunter, I have a red label in 28 ga. that I disabled the auto safety on. The auto safe is a major pain in the ass if you ask me. It is a piece of cake to disable it. All you need is a very carefully applied Dremel tool to make it go away. Jim

Any chance you could specifically explain how to apply the Dremel to fix the problems?? I agree the feature is a pain in the butt, clearly forced upon the gun by lawyers. Help would be appreciated...can't tell you how many doves i missed last year because of it. My 28 ga Win 101 doesn't share the problem, but I do like the Ruger.

At one time, Ruger would convert them to non-auto if you asked. You might check with them to find out if that is still their policy.

Well, I did this to my Ruger many years ago, but if it might help I will give this a try (at your own risk of course!) Smiler

Take off the recoil pad/buttplate and then remove the stock by removing the through-bolt.

Put some snap caps in, then pull the trigger. Now break the gun as you watch. You will see that there are 2 little humps (on a part that I can't describe, but is it easy to identify with the stock off!) that project enough to push the safety back on. Simply file or grind these humps off an you are done.

This doesn't alter the manual function of the safety, but simply removes the bumps that push it back on automatically.

I too lost some birds (Canvasbacks) due to that infernal automatic lawyer safety! Now (after fixing the automatic function), I need a new excuse... Smiler
