A friend has a M98, with a few eagles or something on the reciever and barrel, an S/42 or such on top front of reciever, dated 1937.
Does anyone know where it was made?
And it's in 7.9 Cal.

It's a NAZI rifle made in 1934 or 35 by Mauser Werke Oberndorf. IF the "S42" marking is "S42K" it is a 1934 rifle, if "S42G", it is a 1935 production rifle. However, if the marking is just plain "S42, it was made in 1936, 1937, 0r 1938 at Oberndorf. After 1938, the Mauser Werke code became just plain "42".

Take a look here.... http://militaryrifleslings.com/germar_codes_and_markings.html
