I think this thread has gone south of the original post. Chic was simply looking for a buttplate.

He was looking for a “buttplateâ€...and he found one! But without the “plate!†Smiler

Maybe all the character assassination name calling would be better suited via PM. My dad always said opinions are like A$$holes everyone has one. Everyone has their opinion of the history/stories. Maybe even a few have first hand knowledge. Most probably don't. The man is dead what difference does it make now? What good does it do to throw mud at each other?

As usual just my $.02

Ethics aside, without a patent, "inventions" are/will be copied. Same deal with copy rights. Not sayin' it's right, it's just the way it is.

I’m really not sure what it is about a buttplate that makes it an “invention????????????

We aren’t talking about a new design for a computer chip...this is a friggin piece of steel that gets screwed onto the butt of a rifle stock to protect the wood and hopefully look nice at the same time.

You two don't understand it because your not in the custom gun business. If you relied on the custom gun business for your livlihood you might understand it.

First off, you have no idea what business I'm in. Secondly, I do understand it. FYI, I'm in the custom woodworking and remodeling business. My ideas and concepts are often used by other people in the same business. Does it piss me off? No. Why? Cause that's life in the little city and imitation is one of the highest forms of flattery.

Hey Rick,

Everytime I hear, use, or think of the phrase "well, no shit!" I always think of the wonderful fall I spent at the USMC's resort in San Diego. Our Senior DI loved that phrase.

Semper Fi brother!

You are very correct...I don’t have a clue as to what is being “stolen“ when it comes to the shape of a rifle stock or the decorative embellishments on the finished product.

If a custom gunmaker has a registered trademark, logo, etc., and someone stamps that on a rifle to defraud a buyer or steal the guys business then I can understand the outrage.

But someone takes a buttplate and cuts a pattern of some sort out of the middle of it and now no one else is allowed to do that without being branded as a thief????????? You’re right, I don’t follow that logic.

Well, do you have an idea why he isn' making them anymore?

If these things were profitable to make you would have every company out there pumping them out.

There’s only a few ways to make a metal part and doing it by hand is not real practical or profitable nowadays...and purchasing the machinery to do it requires either a really high price or a huge volume to justify the expenditure.

To me, putting a rubber butt pad on a beautiful wooden stocked rifle is like dressing up a beautiful woman in an evening gown and putting tennis shoes on her feet! However...I seem to be in the minority on that topic and I don’t purchase enough buttplates to keep even one guy in business let alone a whole company.

Some people get very resentful when someone takes something that is available to everyone and does something with it.

Why don't you guys look in an old Brownells you may have. Whose name is next to the skeleton buttplate? Then look in a newer catalog.

I bet Brownells has sold many of these since the name changed. That's a lot of bread & butter.

I Talked to Stan, what a nice guy, didn't seem too worked up about it. Had other work to keep him busy. My origional hunch proved right. Still batting 1000 on my DA posts!

On another note, I looked at Brian Harre's actions at the SCI show. Too bad he's not still making them. Looks to me like he has much more than the causal clue!
