Sometimes things aren't worth the hassle.

I'd take this opportunity to upgrade to #8 scope mount screws. Have a good smith put the action in a mill, and get nice straight strong screws for mounting your bases.

Guys,

I need advice.

As most of you know, I picked up a Charles Daly Mauser recently. I didn't really need it but there it was and I wanted a commercial Mauser just to have.

Well, as soon as I got it home I notice the rear scope base holes were tapped at an angle. If you put the screws in and look at them they tilt to the right, as seen from behind. Rather than being 90 degrees, they are more like 75. Far enough off to cant the rear base over to the right. I sent it back and now CD is telling me it is within spec. Yeah, right!

I could fix it but don't want to. Why should I? It is more the principal of the thing. What recourse do I have? I've as much as said that I'll take em to small claims court if need be. Didn't seem to bother them at all. Essentially I was told what do you expect for the price? Bear that in mind if you are shopping for actions!

Paul has some very good advice here, which is what I'd do anyway even if the holes weren't crooked.

Sometimes it is best just to move on and learn a lesson.

Or you could let this sort of crap consume you, but the only people who benefit then are the guys making Tums. Just remember it could be worse- you could be stuck in a job working for that company!

Correcting an off center or crooked hole is not my idea an afternoon well spent...I'd get rid of the gun at a gunshow where 75 % of the guns there are screwed up one way or the other...The way I would repair it is weld up the holes, but you may have to soften the action and bring it back to specs to do it right..

Thanks for the post, I didn't care for those actions in the first place and some time back Jack Belk told me they were dangerous, I don't recall why he thought that.
