My brother is sending over a 7400 in 243 he's owned for almost two yrs. It's failed to eject the fired rd- and gets caught up with the action open, from the time it was new. A reputable gun shop looked it over and he couldn't determine the problem. Anyone know the problem/solution?

Does it do this on every round, 1 in 10, last or first round? or just whenever you need a fast second shot and everytime else it is OK? Are you shooting just factory ammo or reloads too? And I suppose you have already cleaned and oiled everything 4 or 5 times? Checked for machining burrs all over the operating mechanism? I'd like to make suggestions but without knowing this info I'd probably look like an idiot, and it's hard enough for me not to do that even when I know what I'm talking about!

Hi Mark, The gun does it about every 3rd or 4th rd. I do not have the gun here yet- in a couple days. He's only fired Rem factory ammo.

Hey aladin, Sounds like the possibility of crud build up in the Chamber. As you know, this rifle has to be cleaned from the muzzle. As the brush is pushed down the length of the barrel and enters the Chamber area, the bristles "spring" outward and fling crud into the Chamber. Then when a patch is run down the barrel from the muzzle and into to the chamber, the "patch" will not expand large enough to wipe the chamber walls. This type action needs to have the Chamber cleaned through the Ejection Port. In fact, the good folks at Hoppe's make a special T-handled flexible-nylon cleaning rod just for this situation. You need to use a 45cal bore brush on the end of it to scrub the Chamber clean. Then wrap that same 45cal bore brush with a patch and go back in and rotate the T-handle to wipe it out. "Normally" that will fix the problem. If not, then there is the possibility that a rubber gasket in the Gas Operation System needs replaced, but a Gunsmith should do that. One last tip, when cleaning the rifle, put a "Spent Case" in the Chamber and close the bolt on it. Then when the Bore Brush throws crud, it will be "into" that case. Be sure to mark it so you do not reload that case. You will still need to clean the Chamber, but it will be much easier. Anyway, I hope that fixes it for you. ------------------

Try different bullet weights. As any reloader knows they use different burn speed powders. When my 7400 was new, only 180 grs would work ( at the very beginning only Norma ). Now I got a torn rim at the 20th shot. Think Im gonna swith to 150 grs, S & B and surplus Yugo ~150 work fine. Good Shooting! H ------------------

While it is possible that the chaber is rough or dirty I don't think it is likely. There are no gaskets that I am aware of in the gas system. What there is though is a gas port drilled in the barrel. This port can be plugged with carbon from firing or with copper from a bullet jacket. Or it may simply be the wrong size. Remington lists the appropriatesizes for each cartridge and a Remington service shop should have them. Frequently just cleaning the port out with a torch tip cleaner will do the trick. Some care should be used to avoid scratching the bore. If the gunsmith doesn't know how to access this port he probably should not be working on it. Regards, Bill

Hey Bill, THanks. I must have had a M1100 system on my mind. ------------------

I have Remington 742 BDL .308 that works every time I pull the trigger. A couple of years ago, I bought a Remington 7400 .308 with the synthetic stock. It jammed every time I shot it. I bought a new magazine, it jammed every time I shot it. I tried a lot of different types of ammunition and it jammed every time I shot it. I traded it in.

I know Remington has several different heights of magazine catches. My dad has a 7400 in .308 which was damaging the bullet tips when they chambered. Changing the catches didn't fix that problem, but I started to get extraction failures. Going back to the original catch and seating the bullets deeper cured the damaged bullet thing with no extraction problems. To test this, you may want to individually chamber rounds and fire the rifle with the clip removed. If it extracts correctly, I would try some new catches.

If all of the above fail to fix the problem it probably needs a new barrel. I worked on a friends Model 4 30:06 several years ago even to the extent of taking the barrel off and polishing the chamber( the barrel came off like an 1100 shotgun barrel). He finally sent it back to Remington and they sent it back with a new barrel and it has worked flawlessly since then. The Remington QC isn't very good. Ralph PS- If you really like to shoot an semi-auto take the Reminton to a gunshow and sell it then buy a Browning BAR.
