I just picked up a appears to be a cherry factory FN mauser in 270. The action doesn't have a finger groove, stock has a cross bolt. Serial number on the action is 46XX. Any educated guesses as to the appoximate age?

As usual just my $.02

There were some made with no thumb slot, swept down bolt, but still had the charger hump and I think c ring.

Then the chrger hump and c ring disappeared

According to the Ludwig Olson book, on page 269, FN started making those actions in 1947 and continued until the early 1970s. The first ones were imported by Garcia Sporting Arms Corporation (formerly FIC) of Washingon, DC and had the solid left reciever wall without the thumb notch. The 1948 Version had the safety on the cocking piece. Later versions had the slide safety on the right side of the action.

Many of these were also marketed by Sears, High Standard, Harrington & Richardson, and also used by Weatherby.

I have one marketed by Sears with a 29XXX serial number.

I would GUESS that with your relatively low serial number (46XX) yours was made sometime in the very late 40s or the very early 50s.

When I decided I couldn't hold down a real job (1966) the FN 300's were available and a couple years later, the FN 400...about $78.00 a pop! "c" ring had disppeared by then

I may have one like yours with the s/n 2xxx. I estimate mine was made about 1949 or so. I am not sure of that date.

I just brought the rifle up here and there is no date visible with the stock on. This one has a C ring breech and is also a .270.

Crap I can't read my own writing. Number is 43XX. My 358Norma is a 47xx and the bottom of its barrel says 7-17-1959. Guess it is time to pull the new one from the stock and see what other marking it has.

Interesting, mine is dated 1952 and is SN 22XXX.

hmmmmm I'll relook tomorrow I can't remember that date might be on the barrel. So it might be when the barrel was installed not the action made.

I have two SN 38xx, 300Sav & 30-06, both dated 1951, H-ring. C-rings, vintage 1947, SNs below 1000. But it can depend if the manufacturer was someone else. I have a 1947 C-ring FN Husky 9.3x62 with SN 96xxx. FN actions were supplied to other makers (Weatherby, Marlin, H&R, HVA, High Standard-Sears-Monkey Wards, etc.) w/o SNs so they could supply their own. And you will often see vintage custom FNs w/o SNs but dated on the bottom of the receivers.

OK first the 358Norma has 47XX serial number on the action. The barrel on the bottom says 7-17-1959. It is a H ring. I therefore ASSUME the 1959 date is when the barrel was installed.

The 270 looks just like the picture Savage 99 posted. Both the barrel and action are stamped above the stock line with 43XX there is the large FN on the front ring and several what I assume are proof marks along the left stock line on the barrel below the 270cal stamp. It is a C ring so I guess that puts it in the 47-49 era. It is drilled and tapped but currently only has an Armstrong receiver peep sight and has the old 3 postion military safey.

This one is nunbered 2312 on the action and numbered 33371 on the bbl. I had thought it was an earlier one but has the h ring so it must be 49 or later. couldn't find a date on the bbl.

Mine is a 7x64mm in a B41xx s/n. I've had it guessed at approx 1950.

Very Interesting Alf. Thanks for that info.
So my J.C. Higgins, even though it has a higher serial no., 29XXX, had to be made before 1956 as it has checkering underneath the bolt knob.

Do you know exactly which year they changed the safeties to the right hand side push pull safety?
