Yesterday I found a DWM Brazilian Mauser Mod. 1908 rifle at a friends house. The gun is in good condition, and we were wondering whether the action would be a good basis for a custom rifle. Does anyone have some experience with these actions?

It's a keeper.....build away and build whatever you like.
Mine is a .25-06 that's been shooting prairie dogs for 35 years as well as a helluva lotta deer and pronghorns.

Dear JV,
You might want to have it Rockwelled. I came across one that was pretty soft. Had it redone at Blanchards in Utah and all is well. Better safe than sorry.I did all the needed metal work before sending it out though.Easier on the taps.

Aloha, Mark

Bohica ..... a question: When I send my action to Blanchards, what hardness on the Rockwell scale do I specify that they make the action and the bolt lugs ? I'm getting ready to send them an action, and they will need to know how hard to make the action; I'm using this action to build a 7X57 Mauser.

I think you will be quite pleased with anything built on a solid 1908 action. If it is in good shape it will cycle smooth as snot and feed every time. 7x57 is just what the doctor ordered for that action. There were the cadillac of Mausers, same as the revered 1909 Argentine, just without the overrated hinged floorplate. Is a good idea to check the hardness and reheatreat if needed.

I did one of the same builds. I went a cheaper rout and got a $35 19 1/2" barrel from Numrich, but it shoots great, and feels great in the hands.
