I have a FN 30 06 which I want to recondition and has been abused by my scouts over a number of years. The barrel is heavily pitted and is it possible to lathe off a millimetre or so over the length of the barrel? If you send it off for rebluing, most gunsmiths will polish the barrel with the action on using a barrel spinner and belt sander. There is no need to remove it in most cases. Jumping from a #100, #220 to #320 belt generally will remove .030 to .060 inch. They will take off a lot more in a hurry if they need to. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson | |||

I, personally, would recommend a tool post grinder to keep it straight, but its doable either way.. One wonders if its that bad on the outside if its not pitted on the inside and needs a new barrel???
