I have a FN 30 06 which I want to recondition and has been abused by my scouts over a number of years.

The barrel is heavily pitted and is it possible to lathe off a millimetre or so over the length of the barrel?

If you send it off for rebluing, most gunsmiths will polish the barrel with the action on using a barrel spinner and belt sander. There is no need to remove it in most cases. Jumping from a #100, #220 to #320 belt generally will remove .030 to .060 inch. They will take off a lot more in a hurry if they need to.

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!

You wouldn't be the gentleman that worked at Jaeger's in Grand Junction years ago, would you?

I, personally, would recommend a tool post grinder to keep it straight, but its doable either way..

One wonders if its that bad on the outside if its not pitted on the inside and needs a new barrel???
