Weatherby converted to .338-378

My buddy had a Weatherby MKV rebarreled and the bolt face opened up to take the .338-378 round. However, it will not eject a live round since the tip of the bullet catches on the top of the receiver. Also, it will only accept one round into the magazine.

Can the bolt stop be altered to let the bolt travel far enough back to eject a live round?

Would a .378 magazine box and follower allow more than one round in the magazine?

Or is he stuck with a "two-shooter" and having to pick out a live round from the action?

G'day,

"can the bolt stop be altered to let the bolt travel far enough back to eject a live round?"

If the conversion was done on a short Weatherby action in a cartridge like a 257/270 WBY etc you will find that the bolt stop slot that is machined into the bolt underneath will need to be lengthened towards the bolt face so it matches the big cartridge slot, this would make it about 4.750 inches long instead of 4.260 inches for the short cartridges.
Or maybe his preferred over all cartridge length is longer than the Weatherby Factory specifications.

"Would a .378 magazine box and follower allow more than one round in the magazine?"

Yes it should hold 2 and the magazine is filled from the bottom when floor plate is opened.

Good luck,
Regards,
Charlie

I have converted several Mark V's, originally 7mm's and 300's, to 338-378.

Requires: Milling out the bolt stop groove to 378 action length, milling out the magazine well to accept the 378 box, installing the 378 box and follower, opening the bolt face, and installing the 378 extractor.

Thanks, guys. The "gunsmith" who did this work charged him a pretty penny for an incomplete job. Do you know a gunsmith who might be willing to do this work?

(I see that John is a gunsmith. I'll see if my friend wants to call you and see if you would do the work for him.)

I just sold a Weatherby Accumark originally chambered in 338-378. I had a round notch machined in the rear of the front receiver ring (about 1 to 2 o'clock position) right where the tip of the bullet would be if you were ejecting the loaded round.
