Hello, what are the differences between a 40xb and a 700 remington? I have only seen 40xb's in pictures but I can't tell the difference in the actions. Which leads me to ask. Is there any performance difference between a stock 40x and a 700 that has had the lugs trued, provided they both have quality barrels of course. I mean does a 40X have any performance advantage over what can be done to a 700 by a good gunsmith?

As an owner of two Rem 700VS's and a 40XB-KS, I'd have to say definitely go w/ a custom 700. My 40XB doesn't really shoot any better than my 700VS's, and all they've had done to them is a skim bedding to ensure 100% contact w/ the bedding block, and the stocks lengthened a bit to fit me, and I adjusted the triggers down to 2.5-3#. Difference in price? I bought the 40XB for over twice what the 700VS's went for. I always wanted one, in that style/caliber, but once I got it, it was kind of a letdown, to be honest.
YMMV,
Monte

Sad to say that the 40X, which used to be a pretty good action, now typically needs just as much work as a Rem 700 with respect to squaring everything up.

Markus: If you can find an older 40x most seem to shoot better than a standard 700. I've got acouple of 40x's and the test targets are in the 2's which is the load I use. If I was to buy a new 40x I would call the custom shop and ask what is the average test target group size in the caliber I wanted and go from there. Most 40x's are single shot rifles. There was at one time alot of BR rifles built on the single shot 40x action. I have a heavy BR rifle on one in a 6ppc. They also made a clip feed action with a magazine plus offered actions with a magazine. When brass got tough to get for the 6ppc Rem came out with a BR 40x in a tight neck 6 BR and they also made it in a 22 BR. One of my 40x is a heavy BR rifle in a 222 (wood stock). One of the options with the 40x is a 2 oz trigger plus you could get diferent barrel twist. They also made a 30-338 in a 40x for the long range shooters. Just alittle history. Well good luck! Tom

Tom, aren't 40x and 700 triggers interchangeable? if so then couldn't you have a 2oz trigger put onto a 700?
Yes, the triggers are interchangleable but Rem will only install a 20z on a 40x. Only probem is that with the 2 oz you have no safety or bolt release. You can get a Jewell trigger in a 2oz with a safety and bolt release but they are alitle pricey. On my varmit rifles I have either a jewell or shilen 2 oz trigger. On my huntin rifles I have Neil Jones work the triggers over to about 1 1/2 lb. I've got acouple of 40x 2 oz trigger and they are ok nothing to brag about. It's pretty hard to find a used 40x 2 oz triger but you do see them up for sell once in awhile. Well god luck! Tom
