I am stocking my first military Mauser (1909) and need some ideas on what to do with the top edge of the stock between the bolt stop and finger arch. I've seen the wood extend up against the stop but it would seem to be pretty fragile. This is hunting rifle - do I carve it to look good, leave it out completely or just not bring the top line down to the finger arch? Thanks

My choice it should align with the wood infront of the groove. Like this: http://9-3x62.smugmug.com/phot.../0/L/i-vCKFr8S-L.jpg As usual just my $.02 Paul K

It is fragile to cut but in use, it holds up fine; so contour it however you like it. I usually bring the wood back up against the stop. If you want, you can just make it flat; it's yours. I do think they look better brought back up at the rear, and that is how they are in Military and Commercial Mausers.
