i recently inherited an older ruger M77. looking it over i noticed that it is NOT CRF. there is no opening in the bottom of the bolt face for the cartridge to feed up under the extractor. the top of the bolt face is open(strange). it feeds shells from the mag like a push feed and i can hear and feel the extractor snappng over the cartridge rim upon closing the bolt. were some M77's made this way or is this some sort of defect. it feeds and shoots fine but it's bothering me that it's not CRF and may be defective.

this is normal .. and almost ALL centerfire ruger bolt guns will feed as a push feed.. and snap over.

does it have a round top or dovetails? the very early 77s had a round top, and take, iirc, rem 700 bases.

thanks jeff. that was quick. now we know how much i know about M77's ....i thought they were mauser clones and CRF. this rifle has the dovetail reciever for ruger rings.

All tang safety 77s are push feed and plunger eject. They just have a long extractor which does not pick up the round until fully chambered. Don't let it bother you; just shoot it.

Even the first series of M77 MKIIs were push feed as well.
