I've had a quite a few barrels done on my rifles but this time I'm looking for a relatively quick turnaround. Who would you choose to barrel a FN action in 9.3X62? This isn't a benchrester, it's a hunting rifle for big stuff where gnats azz accuracy isn't required. I do want this one in time to get it bedded into a stock and loads developed for this fall's elk hunting. TIA

I'll be doing one on a VZ-24 in a couple weeks.....but it took a couple months to get the barrel from Shilen.....you might have a time getting the barrel to say nothing of finding someone to attach it.....I can attach it if you have the barrel.

Those Lothar Walther barrels recommended above are sold under some special program. They are pre-chambered, threaded barrels for Mausers and have an unusual contour. The shank is smaller and shorter than usual (contour #720 & 722). I bought one in 8x57, and think it was a good deal, but I have a stock to fit to it which has a small barrel channel, which can be opened up. I think the 8x57 also is the only one where CIP and SAAMI use the same grove, which is .323 for the 8x57. Judging from that barrel, #720 & #722, some factory barrel channels may be too large. Anyway, it may not be a problem for you, but something to consider. This special program barrel is not available in Stainless.

Lothar Walther also offers contoured blanks, which is a different series, and have the usual shank and coutours, in either stainless or CM, and they will pre-fit and chamber it to whatever you want - for a price. The price for this barrel is different than the one recommended above. I think they consider this barrel custom. I can't keep up with their terms.

Woody will explain it to you. If you study their web site carefully, the info is there. http://www.lothar-walther.de/html/269.php There are two or perhaps many more programs offered by LW. The barrels threaded and chambered under the so-called special Mauser program are made to European CIP specs. The bore diameter for their 9.3x62 is .354, and the grove is .365, with 14.2" twist. The second barrel I spoke of above, the custom barrel, is made to US or SAAMI specs, which they say is .354 bore, and .366 grove, with 12" twist. You may want to take this info into consideration.

Also, Pac-Nor has relatively quick turn around, and they will fit the barrel to your action, chambered in 9.3x62, .358 bore, and .366 grove, 12" twist. You will need to send your action to them. Call them. http://www.pac-nor.com/

Hope this info helps.

I used a L-W pre-chambered barrel on my 9.3X62 and I'm glad I did. The contour looks right on the mauser action and the groups I've shot with mine, most of the bullet holes touch at 100yds using Prvi-Partizan factory ammo.

This guy keeps them in stock if L-W doesn't have one

Terry, that's good info to know. My point above is either contour looks good on a Mauser action, but to me it's important how the contour fits into a barrel channel, especially if I already have a stock which already has the channel cut.

I'm also relatively sure the LW barrels will shoot good whether they ar shot in Europe or the USA, or whether they are CIP specs or SAAMI specs. The point is that there are some differences, and some people, like me, want to be informed of those differences.

.001" difference in grove is not going to make much difference even if the bullet diameter is .366, but the twist rate may matter. I would rather have the 12" twist.

Half Moon makes a 9.3-12 cut rifled barrel. I haven't used one, but I'm tempted to try one soon.

Hi Gunmaker,

I talked to Jim (Baier) last week. He has a big job to turn out for an aerospace customer (NASA). He said he won't be able to do any barrels for a while.

His 9.3 barrels have the deeper grooves like they use in Europe. I asked him to let me know when he would be able to do some barrels, and that I would order two 9.3's as well. If I hear something before you, I'll give a shout. We can batch them.
