Jack Daniels stain?

The MetalsmithJack Daniels stain?
Has anyone heard of staining a walnut stock with Jack Daniels? One of the old buzzards from a local gun store back in the day told me about this and I have never attempted it, however now I'm curious.
Any experience or recommendations anyone?

vapodogI can assure you that Jack Daniels has stained a lot of guns over the years.
I' doubt that I'd do it intentionally.

In all seriousness walnut don't need a stain at all.....as a matter of fact it's far more beautiful finished "as is"...no stain.
If you spill a bit of Jack on it.....well...that's a bit of character to be discussed at another time over a campfire.

If you're spilling Jack Daniels on your gun, you're probably the wrong character to be sitting around a campfire.

Rick 0311With the cost of booze I would think wood stain might be a bit cheaper.

You build the biggest and best Boat Dock in all the world, but do they call you "The worlds greatest builder of Boat Docks" Nope! You build the best and most impenetrable fence in all the world, but do they call you "The greatest fence builder of all times"? Nope. But suck one stock!

jimmyd223Only thing I ever stained with JD was my shirt

georgeldCouple yrs ago I took a grandson and two of his buddies shooting. They were brothers. The oldest was named JD. I asked him what the JD stood for. "Jack Daniels", damned sure his name too.
I know where that came from, don't you?? Dated two women over the years: Nova, and Sabre. Sabre claimed her Dad was a pilot in the AF and they'd gotten married while he was in the service. I'll just bet that's where the seed was planted same as Nova's was.

I've never heard of it as a stain. However, is is supposed to be a dark stain, or do you know. I don't really believe in staining walnut either, but that process does sound interesting. Also, would the alcohol content have some kind of reaction to the finish? Oh well, just curious? Tom Purdom

<xs headspace>Heard of an old timers stain made from alcohol and the outer shells from black walnut-guess you could use JD for that, but why use the good stuff?? The modern dye stains in alchohol are great, and they don't have the muddy pigment to hide the highlights. Walnut needs some reddish stain, to look like the old linseed finish. Without the old linseed oil, to gum up in the rain, that is. I use a mix of 4 parts walnut, 1 part mahogany dye. Used on a laminated stock, it looks like striped rosewood, even.

matt salmMight be something you could use to raise the grain in the final sandings, and add a touch of warm amber color to it in the process?

The MetalsmithWell the curiousity is getting the better of me, so tonight I'm going to get a little bottle of it and use some of it on a small piece of walnut to see how it comes out. I'm currently building a display piece muzzleloading pistol for the colonel of the base over here, and I thought maybe it would be something interesting to attempt on the stock. Just strange thoughts, that's all!

ROFLMFAO!!!!!!

I have it on very good authority that Potassium Hydroxide makes a pretty good walnut stain if you want to try it.
23 May 2006, 20:19
<xs headspace>Potassium permangenate is a good stain, but pot. hydroxide is lye-used for paint removal. Must be neutralized with vinegar to keep from ruining any later finish! Watch out! Permangenate is used in water treatment systems, and a water solution goes on purple, and then oxidises the wood to a darker brown. Cool to watch happen. Most effective on cherry.

jeffeossoI've used rubbing alky for raising grain.. would think the pigments in most colored booze are too light to be signifigant.
