Hey guys, what is a source for orthopedic cowskin, or if nobody knows that where can pigskin suitable for covering recoil pads be had from? yes, I searched the web, but don't know a lot about leather so don't know what else they are calling the "orthopedic cow". Thanks all. Red

Try Tandy Leather if they are still around. Last I heard they got bought out by Radio Shack. They used to carry orthopedic cow and elk hides...don’t know about pigskin. You can also contact companies that use it on orthopedic products and ask them where they purchase it. There also used to be a company named T.L. Trading in Fort Worth, Texas that carried ever kind of leather imaginable.

Yep, Tandy Leather. Bill Soverns and Chic Worthington had a page or two on leather covered pads somewhere... We need a "links" or archive page or a FAQ perhaps here??? Called it "Pigskin Liner" according to my notes.

Listen to DeeBee, unless he is spelling my name, lol. Pigskin Liner leather from Tandy. Bill was the originator or at least he was passing along the story of the orthopedic cow. I myself, could not get passed the thought of this cow with a artificial leg wandering around the pasture.

Now that I’ve gotten the image of Chic’s amputee cow out of my head...I would add that you shouldn’t place too much stock (or money) in the term “orthopedic†when buying leather. It’s sort of like when some says something has been “surgically sharpened“ and they want you to pay more for it. If you want a really tough but soft leather you might consider vegetable tanned horse hide.

Actually, I’ve always preferred Nauga Hide...but I understand the Nauga’s are endangered now.

Only reason they call it "orthopedic" is due to the tanning process. No dyes or anything that can cause an allergic reaction are used. Its made for building prosthetics. Its basically just very thin cow skin and stretches nicely. So does pig skin liner by the way.

Red, I understand you are from the northwest and the place I get my pigskin is "Oregon Leather". I bought a whole hide from them a number of years ago for $36. Call of email me and I will send the address. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

Rick: There is no sortage of Nagas here in Alabama. I see new Naga covered furniture every time a whirlwind hits a trailer park. I have hunted for them for years with my 300 Weatherby, because with skin that tough I assume them to be dangerous and they must be big beause some of the settees I have seen would take three or four bis cows to cover. Judge Sharpe. Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?
