I use a large coarse disc sander to take the pad down to within a couple millimeters of the grind-to line.

It cuts straight like a laser beam and does not distort the pad.

I then finish on a fine disc sander to produce a smooth finish.

There are many choices in tools, but to really get a nice final product it takes many pads and alot of practice and repetition.

I use a belt because my disk sander is a bit small with the pad on the fixture.
Then finish on a polisher with Polish O Ray
