Get a custom chamber reamer from Manson Or Dave Kliff (see above posts) and chamber your rifle barrel and make a seating die then return the reamer to be reground so you can use it to make your own resizing die.

The resizing die can be made from low carbon steel and case hardened .015 deep to 87.5 15-N minimum. Polish with 320 grit paper on a stick and you're ready to shoot.

Jim,
When I'm ready to go with this project I will give you a call. What I have in mind is basically a .338 hawk with a 40 deg. shoulder or a 9.3x62 necked down to .338 or a .338 gibbs may be what I'm looking to do with my springfield 03A3 action. There has been some talk on the wildcat board about this project and it seems somewhat appealing. It doesn't look like there is a whisper of difference between these cases so the least expensive path is the way to go.

You might try Hugh Henriksen, He is listed in the phone book under Heriksen tool Company. His shop is in Talent Or. I have used a number of the reamers by those already listed and found them to be pretty darn good. I have sold all but four non Henriksen's and have those up for sale at this very . I'd hate to add up the inventory cost I have in this tooling. Hugh does an excellent job every single time, I have never sent one back that I didn't screw up somehow myself. My reords show I ordered my first from him in June of 1980.

D'Arcy,
I ordered my first reamers from Hugh in about 1978 and I too consider him to be the best of the reamermakers. His reamers not only work well but look like jewelry. Great stuff. The reamers from JGS and Pacific tool are similar (I've always suspected these guys are all related!) and pilots interchange. I have to say I have not been dissatisfied with any with the exception of one JGS which was improperly ground (this was corrected at no cost and with no argument and was about 20 years ago). IN a way the reamer selection now is much like the selection of barrels. There are so many good ones it becomes hard to make a choice so you just go with who you know. Regards, Bill.

I have reamers from both Dave Manson and Dave Kiff and they are excellent. Dave Manson helped me design my 338x57 MAI and I had Hornaday make up the reloading dies. Everything worked perfectly! Good to know about more reamer makers out there. Thanks for the information.

I just got in another reamer from Hugh and will use it in the morning as my better half has shot out another barrel. It's a 6.5-270 win that we call the 6.5 Asp. It has a 30 degree shoulder formed by the FL die by pushing the 17 degree original shoulder to the rear until the shoulder angle is reformed at 30. The new neck is longer which is handy for chasing the lands. It is The only type of wildcat I like as it takes one die and one pass. My wife loves to shoot it at antelope and deer. It kills instantly. It could also be those 107gr Sierra Match kinds at 3300fps that we use, oops!!!!! let the flaming begin.

You guys remind me of the Keith Francis reamers I used to buy.....they looked like works of art more so than a cutting tools.

Oddball,

The 9.3x62 necked to .338 is essentially .338 Scovill. You can find it in the last Barnes manual and reamers are already out there, but I don't know who has them.

One of the other guys on the board is looking at the .338x .376 Styer. If you looking for something different that will outperform the Hawk, Scovill, A.I, rounds, et al, that round in the improved form is the ticket.

Vapodog,
I know Hugh Henriksen used to work for Kieth Francis and JGS also grew out of the Francis operation. Dave Kiff used to grind for JGS. You see what I mean when I say I suspect they are all related! There seems to be a small part of Oregon where they breed reamer grinders!A good thing for the rest of us. Regards, Bill.

Wonder where Dan Green is these days.. He made some really nice tools also. Some of which I still use regularly..

My gunsmith has had many reamers made by Dave Kiff and Dave has been an excellent resource for making decisions on reamer dimensions. Every one of his reamers is custom so you don't pay any extra to get the dimensions you want.
Measure the bore diameter of your barrel and Dave can then supply a floating pilot of the right diameter. Measure in the barrel at the depth the neck will be for the best tolerances to aid in concentrencity (spelling?).

I found the .338 scovill in my barnes manual. There must be something seriously wrong with the cartridge demensions barnes has suplied. When I pluged those dimensions into my RCBS cartridge designer it comes out looking like a top. Is there another source for case dimensions for the .338 scovill case?

The more I look at some other case dimensions in my barnes manual I come to realize this book is WAY screwed up! Who the hell even let this thing out on the market? Did they have an editor? Honestly, I am sceptical to try any load in this book. The strange thing is I've had this book for a couple of years and just now noticed it.
