Hey all, I have a simple question for the 'smiths out there. I recently aquired an older H&R Topper 12 ga. without the transfer bar that someone has been in at least once. It appears the firing pin was replaced and now protrudes so far as to prevent the barrel from closing without drawing back the hammer. How far out should the pin extrude with the hammer down? I havent measured it yet, I assumed the pin return spring was broken but it was not. I did a detail strip on it and cleaned all parts but the pin still sticks out too far to close. Can someone please give me deminsions of firing pin length or pin extrusion?

It is a floating firing pin and so you should only need about .060 protrusion to fire the gun. Pull the barrel and measure the protrusion. With the hammer cocked and out of the way, push the pin all the way forward and measure the total protrusion. I would remove anything that protrudes over .060. Good luck.

Thanks for the assist, malm. I bought the gun at auction and all actions were zip-tied closed so I wasnt able to do a good inspect beforehand. The gun went for $40.00 and needs a pad, but I am tired of dragging a nice clean shotgun thru the brush at the river so thought this would be a nice buy. It has a 28" full choke.
