generally 15-25fps per inch.. but it varies ALOT on the pressure of the rounds and the pwders used
huge increase in muzzle blast, without a doubt.

so, something like -120fps, double the fireball

grizzinater: I am guessing with a 300 grainer you would lose at most 15 fps.Maybe with a little fooling around with powders, and a little bit of added pressure, no velocity loss.If you want the shorter barrel for brush hunting, you can sacrifice some accuracy for speed. On another subject, could you bring us up to date on your Ruger 416 Taylor.I am thinking of adding another 416 to my stable.Yours sounds interesting. Thanks

Go to http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/tableinfo.htm and it will detail it for you. Rough rule of thumb is 10fps per inch below 24". Bullet weight does not enter into their equation only velocity. I took an Elephant with my 21" 416Rigby right at dusk and didn't even notice the blast or the light. I was only concerned with the shot. It was good.

Jeffe gets my money.....maybe a bit more since you're cutting quite short...I'd venture 150'/sec loss

You all, half your luck. It seems with 20" .223, 20" 30-30, 22".458wm, I always seem down about 100 fps for a 2" reduction.
